As a long-time fan of the Real Housewives franchise, I must say that this season of New York has left me utterly disillusioned and disappointed. Having watched countless episodes over the years, I have grown accustomed to the drama, the catfights, and the occasional truth-telling. But what transpired between Erin and Becky this season crossed a line for me.
As I tuned into this Becky Minkoff-focused installment, my thoughts drifted to, “At last, we’re playing Housewives!” A juicy secret was in the air, rapidly contagious like a chlamydia outbreak at Coachella. Everyone was scrambling to uncover the truth, and it seemed Becky Minkoff might shake things up and no longer be dull. I started pondering all the potential storylines for the remainder of the season, considering how this secret could reshape the group and alter their dynamics. My excitement level soared! Essentially, RHONY is making a comeback, darling!
Until the last moments of the episode, Erin Mew Mew Lichy and Becky had a disagreement during their group dodgeball match and exited the playing area. Erin grinned at Becky and remarked, “That was fun,” to which Becky responded with laughter.
Friends, let me make it clear – this situation appears to be a deceitful trick. If my suspicions are correct, these two individuals have orchestrated this as a joke at someone else’s expense, and I must say, I’ve rarely been more irate with the Housewives franchise. Back in the early days of the internet when I was a blogger, we would often include disclaimers like “If this is true, it’s astonishing,” because hoaxes were rampant online. Sadly, I fell for a few myself, including Becky’s April Fool’s prank claiming she’d join the cast of RHONY, which turned out to be untrue. I will not make that mistake again with this supposed news.
The narrative throughout the episode largely revolves around something Becky shared with Mew Mew during their lunch. Subsequently, Erin shares this information with Jessel and Brynn over lunch the following day. She mentions that Becky told her she’s pregnant again. However, Erin also suggests a rumor she heard (though she doesn’t specify the source) about Rebecca and her husband Gavin being non-monogamous, implying that Becky may have been involved with another man. This tale is intriguing enough to be captivating, yet not so outlandish that it can definitively be deemed untrue.
At Sai’s dodgeball gathering, as the women arrived dressed in different athletic attire, Brynn chose to disclose a secret. She told Sai, Jenna, Racquel, and Ubah about something that had been kept under wraps. However, it seemed that Sai had already informed Ubah. Regardless, everyone became aware of the information, embraced the news, and expressed concern over Becky participating in dodgeball due to fears of injuring her stomach. Brynn even revealed that she had previously worked with Gavin, contacted a mutual friend, and this friend confirmed that they have some sort of non-exclusive relationship. As Brynn put it, it’s the year 2024, so secrets are no longer a secret.
In a different setting, it’s clear that only Jenna took offense to the news that left the other girls giggling. Since Jenna has strict boundaries about partners and children, this baseless chatter rubbed her the wrong way. Towards the conclusion of their game (perhaps it could be referred to as a round in dodgeball?), Jenna cautions Becky, hinting that rumors are circulating about her and advises her to exercise caution. As Jenna prefers not to fan the gossip flames, Becky interprets Jenna’s message non-verbally by reading her eyes. When Jenna looks at Erin, their disagreement ignites.
Initially, I was thrilled by the idea presented in the show, but upon closer inspection, it appears to be unfounded. Firstly, as far as my research and a casual glance at her Instagram account suggest, Becky Minkoff has not given birth or had a child since the show was aired. There could be several explanations such as a miscarriage, abortion, adoption, but there’s no baby involved. Moreover, it seems unlikely that they would have omitted the scene where Becky informs Erin about her pregnancy, especially since the lunch was filmed. Wouldn’t you agree that if Becky were pregnant during the filming, they would have included that significant moment in the show?
There’s a wealth of additional supporting evidence to consider. It’s clear that Becky enjoys playing April Fools pranks in a poor taste manner, as witnessed by her attempt to instigate a fake argument with Jenna, which Jenna wisely declined due to her keen understanding of reality TV and intelligence. Unlike Becky, Erin lacks the knack for pulling off pranks, and her sense of humor is as unfavorable as Jessel’s excessive shopping habit. Her initial prank led to a heated argument in a hot tub with Ubah, while her second prank resulted in Ubah vomiting Jenna Lyon’s flawlessly made pavlova (not a metaphor). This type of unfunny antics is precisely the kind that Erin would find hilarious.
The primary issue at hand revolves around the information Brynn received from her confidant near Gavin, as People magazine might put it. There are two plausible scenarios. One possibility is that Brynn was aware of this prank and chose to participate, which suggests she has acting skills beyond my initial expectations. The other option is that she actually contacted someone who confirmed that Gavin and Rebecca engage in questionable activities, and then exaggerated the details. Notice how she was exposed for distorting Jenna’s words about Jessel. During lunch, Brynn told Jessel that Jenna hadn’t called her basic, but also didn’t deny it. However, upon reviewing the actual conversation, Jenna never said or implied that at all. It appears Brynn initiated the entire misunderstanding and then goaded Jessel to react. When confronted, Jessel, acting maturely, brought it up with Jenna who admitted the truth, and Jessel simply replied, “Yeah, that’s Brynn.” (Jessel earned MVP for the episode in the end when Becky was upset with Erin for revealing her pregnancy news to others, and Jessel responded with a confused, sorrowful, and frustrated tone all at once.)
In simpler terms, there’s a possibility that the story about Becky being pregnant as a swinger (which could be more accurately described as “casual swinging”) might be based on some truth. It’s like we’re in a state of suspense, waiting for more information at the end of this episode. If it turns out to be true, it would mean that Becky has multiple partners and all her children have different fathers. For now, I’m skeptical because I believe this story might be exaggerated or even entirely fabricated, much like Kim Zolciak’s numerous plastic surgeries.
Frankly, I’m incredibly upset about it. It wouldn’t be so bad if Kyle Richards and Lisa Vanderpump had concocted a tale for RHOBH, one where Lisa discovered Kyle with another woman. (It certainly would have added an interesting twist.) But in this hypothetical scenario, it would have just been a brief storyline, and they would have shared it with the other girls, and everyone would have laughed. Keeping in mind that the group of diamond holders usually provided enough drama, one fabricated story, especially if we were in on the joke, would have been amusing and cute.
The problem here is that RHONY is currently giving us nothing. It didn’t let us in on the joke because, if we were, this would have been nothing. Even worse than Erin and Becky deciding to play this trick is the producers, editors, and executives who went along with it and based a whole episode around it because the only good drama that we have had all season is this bullshit fakery that looks like a Gooci bag that Sai bought on Canal Street as a teenager. Pranks are one thing, and games are another, but manufacturing storylines for kicks and then getting the whole network to go along with it is, I’m sorry a fireable offense.
Currently, neither of the two women can return due to ideological issues, which is unfortunate since I was starting to grow fond of both. The duo, Mel and Abe, arranged a double date at what they referred to as a lesbian bar. Interestingly, Mel has started calling him Gabe, short for Gay Abe. He even confesses that he contemplated kissing men during his college years, and if he were to do so now, I have no doubt that my mustache is something he hasn’t experienced before. Erin was present, open-minded, and seemed to genuinely enjoy herself. This side of Erin isn’t someone I would dislike entirely.
In this scene, it was Racquel who truly stole the show. It wasn’t until she lived in an Italian model house and worked alongside her female roommates that she realized her attraction towards women. Every story she shares is remarkably truthful, funny, and outrageous – they’re like no other tales we’ve ever heard. So, the question remains: where is Racquel’s memoir? The Housewives Institute has a full schedule, but we are more than willing to write her book for free, just so we can continue enjoying Racquel’s captivating narratives.
Later, there’s a heartwarming moment when Sai takes her daughter London to Becky’s workshop to check out the props from the movie Wicked, which inspired a shoe and bag collection that Sai designed. Although the movie is set to premiere soon, this could be seen as product promotion (and admittedly more tactful than when Dorinda Medley and Sonja Tremont Morgan of the Universal Pictures Morgans went to watch The Hustle during an episode). However, it was refreshing to see Sai in a caring mother role, and the fact that Becky gave London a free purse is perhaps the only kind or engaging action we’ve seen from her since she’s been on our screens for months.
It’s not solely about my dislike for Erin and Becky, but their actions are jeopardizing the entire venture. While a portion of the appeal in Housewives lies in discerning truth from falsehood and supporting our preferred characters, during conflicts like the one between Katie Ginella and Heather Dubrow on RHOC, both parties genuinely believe their perspective. However, Erin and Becky’s fabricated disputes have made it challenging to trust anything they ever say in the future.
After a game at Chelsea Piers, a black Escalade was parked by the West Side Highway. A redhead in the back observed as Jessel walked by in her padded pants. She recognized Jenna Lyons and her sunglasses that bore the marks of a ball. She spotted Sai heading back to Brooklyn with her curly hair, trying to manage a family amidst this economy. Her target eventually appeared. “Gary, pull up next to her,” the redhead instructed. As the car passed Becky Minkoff, the woman in the back seized her and shut the door. Becky was startled and heard the doors lock behind her. “Listen carefully, young lady. I didn’t create this entire show for you to mess it up. You need to stop this fake storyline immediately or there will be consequences.” The doors unlocked suddenly, leaving Becky on the curb before she could even begin singing “Defying Gravity.” The car drove away, and Jill Zarin was glad she stepped in just in time.
