The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season-Premiere Recap: Separation Anxiety

As a long-time fan of the Real Housewives franchise, I must say that this season of Beverly Hills has me utterly bewildered and intrigued, much like stepping into a Salvador Dali painting! The surrealist atmosphere and bizarre twists and turns are reminiscent of my own life – only instead of antlers on heads, we have cats on keyboards.

Greetings and welcome back to the comeback of your cherished series, titled “Wealthy Women at Work“. And here’s a fun fact for you: These wealthy ladies aren’t just sitting around; they’re actively engaging in various activities. They find themselves in Atlanta where they’re discussing the recent abduction-themed movies they’re filming with their sons. Their next destination is Jennifer Tilly’s house, which resembles a spooky carnival. But that’s not all; they also visit the Pacific Design Center to browse through expensive decorative boxes that might be a bit extravagant for living rooms. However, what seems to consume most of their time? Well, darling: It appears that many of these affluent women are dealing with divorce issues.

Actually, they’re taking a break instead of splitting up. It’s like when a TV show goes on hiatus, not forever canceled. But, just like that TV show, it might return, although it could be as far off as 2072. However, considering the predicted end of the world in 2069, it’s safe to say it won’t be coming back then. The same sentiment applies to Dorit’s marriage – it may resume at some point, but given the current circumstances, it might not happen.

In simpler terms, Dorit discusses with Erika at the Pacific Design Center, not far from SUR, that she and PK are going their separate ways. She explains this as a decision made amicably between two adults who deeply care for each other, but the situation seems more complex than what she’s saying. This is one of Dorit’s traits that bothers me; she often presents a positive image while hiding the unpleasant truth. It’s like if you ask her about a restaurant and she says it’s wonderful, when in reality, she had a terrible experience due to poor food quality. Eventually, the real story usually comes out; I just wish she would be more straightforward.

When news breaks out, we find the entire cast perusing an announcement, and Garcelle remarks, “Ah, this is from Dorit. Naturally, it’s lengthy.” We poke fun at her talkative nature and claim she doesn’t listen much, but given the breakdown of her marriage and strained friendship with Kyle, excessive talking and inattention might be her life’s recurring issue.

We get a scene with Mauricio and PK, a liver spot in the shape of Harvey Weinstein’s mutilated genitals, in which they meet to talk about the divorce. Um, excuse me. What are these dudes doing here? They divorced their wives, which means we never have to see them again. Why are they getting to talk about themselves? This is not how the show works. The guys get a voice as long as they’re with the women, but as soon as they’re dumped, we never have to look at their ugly mugs again. Thems the rules.

In simpler terms, PK finds Dorit’s behavior quite entertaining, and when asked about it by Mo, PK explains that he got sober and realized they had been arguing all along. He also mentions that Dorit isn’t the best listener, a trait we’ve observed as well. Additionally, PK claims that he was always striving to preserve their lavish lifestyle for the show, even though their home is facing foreclosure due to financial struggles.

Dorit pays a visit to Kathy Hilton’s residence for a conversation about their separation. While there, she finds Kathy being pampered by her glam squad, sipping on a chocolate milkshake from the Beverly Hills Hotel, and even notices that the least favored bellhop was tasked with delivering it. Dorit confides in Kathy that PK, who had been affected by food poisoning from undercooked shrimp, has become an alcoholic. She recalls how they would argue fiercely when PK was drinking, and she urged him to quit drinking, which ultimately led to their marital split as he embarked on his sobriety journey.

In simpler terms, Dorit has supported PK through various financial, tax, and DUI scandals, but one argument was enough for him to call it quits on their marriage. Dorit believes there’s a difference between having an argument and separating, but PK feels differently. He no longer wants to put in the effort to maintain the marriage. Additionally, Dorit praises Kathy for her excellent listening skills, stating that she’s as good a listener as a stone Buddha statue at the entrance of a mediocre spa in Thousand Oaks.

This season, Dorit’s separation could be a major focus, but the main plotline established in the premiere revolves around Kyle and Dorit clashing fiercely. After discussing matters with Dorit at the Pacific Design Center, Erika visits Kyle to discuss their conflict. Through Erika’s mediation, we get insights into both women’s perspectives on their argument. It’s amusing that by enduring scandals and lasting longer than any other woman, Erika has become the only ally left for the two remaining members of the Fox Force Five. Being in this position is advantageous since neither Dorit nor Kyle are leaving the group soon. This seems like a form of job security, which might be why Erika has chosen now to renovate her space.

It appears that the core issue in this disagreement between Dorit and Kyle isn’t entirely clear. Dorit feels that Kyle has been retaliating against her since their last two reunions, specifically when Dorit attempted to mediate a dispute between Kathy and Kyle. On the other hand, Kyle believes the conflict started during the last reunion, when she asked Dorit not to discuss their issues on air and then discovered that Dorit had read the private text during the broadcast. Since then, it seems like small, seemingly petty actions have been fueling the tension. Recently, Dorit expressed frustration over Kyle’s claim that they were never close friends because they only went on one trip together as couples. However, I find that statement puzzling since going on a single trip with someone could still signify a strong friendship, especially given that many of my good friends and I haven’t gone on trips together.

Kyle became frustrated during BravoCon when Andy Cohen was hosting a game where truth-telling or taking a shot was required. Dorit, asked to rank the Sisters Richards according to her liking, seemed about to take a drink instead of disclosing her answer, causing Kyle to react strongly. Erika comments that platforms like Amazon Live and Watch What Happens Live, as well as events like BravoCon, are significant, even if they may seem small to some, but are increasingly intertwining with the shows themselves.

It appears that Erika and Dorit are having trouble understanding each other. Kyle didn’t intend to manipulate, as stated by her, but Dorit perceived it that way. Similarly, Dorit didn’t aim to criticize Kyle on Watch What Happens Live, but she was seen doing so. If they could sit down somewhere peaceful and discuss their issues, perhaps they could resolve everything and remain friends. However, when Erika suggests it’s a matter of miscommunication, Dorit replies, “I believe there is more manipulation than miscommunication, and I think she’s more skilled at manipulation than I ever imagined.” Ouch. It seems like this situation might be difficult to overcome.

At last, the two settle for a conversation at Sutton’s Surrealist Ball, the highly anticipated event marking the beginning of the season. The episode concludes prematurely, leaving us with just a brief glimpse of this event. I’m eager to gain some additional insight into Dorit’s perspective regarding Kyle’s actions towards her and why their friendship appears so uneven. It’s not that I think she’s necessarily wrong; I simply require a few more practical examples to fully comprehend her narrative. However, obtaining these examples might prove as challenging as reading both War and Peace and the Martin Scorsese film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio in one go, given their length and my reluctance to watch the lengthy movie.

Regarding the Surrealist Ball topic, shall we discuss everyone’s unique ensembles, don’t you agree? Sutton is adorning a black gown with pink lining and a long train, and she has antlers on her head. Although it’s an unusual addition, the outfit fits the theme quite well. Her companion, Jennifer Tilly, appears to be channeling Björk in multiple black swans. The design is undeniably surreal, but I must admit that the dress cut doesn’t seem particularly flattering on Miss Tilly.

I find myself admiring Dorit’s unique ensemble, which resembles the robotic figure from an old Svedka advertisement, particularly her striking headpiece. While this outfit might have left Thierry Mugler (rest in peace) impressed, it doesn’t quite fall into the surreal category. Instead, it leans more towards futuristic. As Sutton puts it, Dorit seems to have wandered into the wrong wing of the museum. However, Dorit insists that the newest housewife, Bozoma “Boz” Saint John, got the assignment right, and she echoes this sentiment because, like her, Boz may also have misunderstood the assignment. Boz’s dress, much like Dorit’s, is a spectacle. It’s reminiscent of a giant, cream-colored loofah with a train as long as one of those massive freighters used for quick Amazon Prime deliveries. There’s nothing surreal about this creation, but it certainly is big, beautiful, and over-the-top – yet not a Big, Beautiful, and Over the Top Ball.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, let me tell you, Garcelle certainly delivered! The moment she exited her car adorned in a striking white gown with a long white cape and butterflies perched gracefully in her tresses, I couldn’t help but cheer, “Slay it!” However, my excitement was short-lived when Erika appeared. My response then shifted to, “Maybe it’s time for a well-deserved break, you’ve been giving it your all and you must be drained.” Her ensemble consisted of a bold black-and-white bodysuit, complete with a cape that sported two enormous eyes on the shoulders. It was surreal, eerie, and something straight out of a Salvador Dalí masterpiece!

Kyle is sporting deer-like headgear similar to Sutton. Her accessory adds a rustic feel, while Sutton’s has an Art Nouveau vibe, making one slightly less impressive. However, Kyle is flaunting her new figure in a low-cut dress, which could give her the edge. But it’s tough to decide. Later, Kathy Hilton arrives three hours late, dressed in a green muumuu from Phyllis Diller for Chico’s collection and a tiara. She might have said she came dressed according to the theme “So Real.” Upon arriving at the party, she sits with the ladies and starts removing her hair extensions, claiming the heat was too much for her. But if she can’t manage extensions, what business does she have on this reality TV show?

At the party, Kyle chooses to sit with Erika and Garcelle for a private chat about Morgan Wade. She doesn’t explicitly name Morgan because, it seems, discussing her publicly makes their friendship or situation more real, similar to Dorit’s divorce. However, like Garcelle points out, they can’t simply stop talking about Morgan after everything that has happened. Kyle invited Morgan on the show, she featured in a provocative music video, and she even took her to Watch What Happens Live despite the tabloid drama. So, it appears that Kyle is trying to avoid discussing Morgan, but the reality TV star herself made it impossible for this subject to be avoided. It’s clear that Kyle feels uncomfortable with all the speculation surrounding Morgan, but she initiated their relationship and started flirting with her just as J.D. Vance does with a La-Z-Boy chair.

In summary, Kyle clearly states that she and the other individual are not in a relationship, a claim I find credible. However, the rest of their conversation strikes me as peculiar, mysterious, and enigmatic. She mentioned that she never contemplated her sexuality until it became a topic in the gossip columns. She spoke to her daughters about it, expressing concern over their potential reactions, but if she’s neither queer nor with Morgan, one might wonder why such concerns would arise? Kyle suggests that discussing this matter is not appropriate when another person is involved, yet if she’s not with Morgan and Morgan openly identifies as gay, why can’t she mention her name? I find it puzzling how Morgan fits into the picture if they are not in a relationship.

It’s clear that Kyle is attempting to understand this situation. She finds herself in an unusual environment – one where reality seems blurred or perhaps solidified. Here, timepieces dissolve on tree limbs, and individuals sport antlers as if they are part-human, part-beast. In this realm, divorces are redefined as separations, aspiring to surpass their actual nature. Here, men appear on the show without their wives, and friendships discuss relationships deteriorating without acknowledging any added tension. Yes, it’s all very dreamlike, and it appears that this season will be a whirlwind of excitement for us all.
