This week, on the season finale of our beloved series, Rich Women Doing Things, the wealthy ladies engaged in a variety of activities! They took a dip in the sparkling Caribbean Sea, which is the only body of water they prefer to swim in, and remarkably, their elaborate swimwear – a delicate network of straps resembling a cosmic constellation – miraculously remained intact. Unfortunately, some affluent ladies couldn’t join the swimming fun because their extravagant hair extensions and gold ornaments in their weaves were so heavy they would drag them straight to the ocean floor like a statue of Artemis at the heart of Atlantis. The wealthy women spent their entire day pampering themselves in their suite, applying every imaginable cream, toner, serum, and mask using various applicators that looked like magical wands.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder if Kathy Hilton feels trapped in this journey. Unlike the other rich women who seem unfazed, my curiosity is piqued. Kathy appeared to have no interest whatsoever in this trip, just as PK appears indifferent towards his children, like a three-wick candle devoid of any parental warmth. Could she have been unwell? At one point, she disappears from dinner only to reappear in a completely different outfit, casually mentioning that she had an accident. Perhaps it was the tropical heat during July? Regardless, Kathy looked far from content. The most disheartening moment came when they all gathered for dinner, and Kyle shouted into Kathy’s room asking about her attire. “A T-shirt and shorts,” she replied, which I initially assumed to be a jest (it wasn’t).
As the women are browsing at the evening market, Kyle converses with Sutton, and I found myself surprised to see another tourist approaching them. She appeared ordinary in a casual green T-shirt and shapeless white shorts. She carried a handheld fan, balanced a bag on her elbow, and had a cloth tied around her neck – an outfit you might wear to collect your kids from soccer practice without drawing attention. But this wasn’t just any tourist; it was Kathy, who seemed to have abandoned all pretense of being on a TV show. When she settled down, she even requested ice bags for her underarms. It seems Kathy has lost some of her former grace!
As a dedicated moviegoer, I must admit that the latest episode seemed to leave me on the sidelines of the main narrative, focusing on the fallout between Erika, Dorit, and Kyle against Sutton, following their heated confrontation on the boat trip. Sutton feels that these three have been attempting to “wear her down” for quite some time now, but they’ll all be quick to remind us of instances where Sutton has shown volatile behavior, played the victim card, or made situations revolve around herself.
The creative editing team did an outstanding job presenting two captivating segments. The first showed Erika, Kyle, Dorit, and Lisa Rinna (who seems to have lingered long after her departure) targeting Sutton, while the second highlighted actions of Sutton’s that may have provoked such treatment from the others. Essentially, the series is subtly suggesting that viewers can engage in their debates on social media, group chats, and during intense brunches where discussions revolve around TV friends rather than real-life companionship.
Much like Joni Mitchell’s most melancholic tune, the show seems to be expressing a unique perspective, acknowledging both sides of the story without taking a definitive stance. They see the complexities and nuances in each character, leaving it up to us, the audience, to make our own judgments.
Initially, Sutton declines joining them for dinner that evening, leaving Garcelle and Jennifer Tilly to tidy up a bit. Things start getting complicated from there. Jennifer points fingers at Erika and Dorit, suggesting they orchestrated an attack on the boat, while Garcelle accuses Kyle of not standing by Sutton’s side. It’s unlikely that Erika and Dorit were plotting against Sutton over breakfast like a couple of villainous characters from a cartoon, scheming with malicious intent as Skeletor and the Purple Pie Man might do. Instead, these situations tend to unfold subtly and indirectly.
It’s evident that this topic has been previously addressed between them. Throughout the entire season, Erika has expressed her viewpoint privately. Moreover, the ladies often discuss one another in smaller groups. Dorit and Erika likely talk about Sutton, just as Sutton and Garcelle chat about them. Although it wasn’t a coordinated strategy, they were well-prepared because they had been discussing their points independently, which is why it appeared as if they had rehearsed when it came to confronting Sutton. They weren’t conspiring, but they were ready for the discussion.
The issue of Kyle not supporting Sutton appears to be complex and somewhat difficult to understand, especially when Kyle responds angrily by saying “This is Erika’s argument, and somehow it’s my fault. Fuck that.” However, it seems there might be some truth in the claim that Kyle shares responsibility for this situation. As previously mentioned this season, Kyle plays a central role in the show and has been present since the beginning. She also serves as a connection between Sutton and the rest of Fox Force Five (including Boz).
If Kyle had ever sat down with Erika and Dorit during this season and encouraged them to be more considerate towards Sutton, they might have changed their behavior. Additionally, whenever this topic arises, if Kyle chose to intervene and put a stop to the discussion, she certainly could have done so. This is because Kyle holds significant power in the group. Therefore, while Kyle did not initiate the conversation, she had the ability to halt it at any point she desired.
It appears that Sutton feels deceived by Kyle because she doesn’t want to cooperate with her. I believe that Kyle’s past hurt feelings towards Sutton from last season are the reason for this, and it seems like she’s exacting some form of retribution. When Sutton inquires if Kyle believes she targets women when they’re vulnerable, Kyle expresses (consistently) in her private reflections that she thinks it’s true.
Besides the initial reason, there’s an additional point to consider. When Kyle informs Sutton that everyone needs to face scrutiny in turn, Sutton remarks that no one has targeted Kyle as intensely as they have targeted her, and she is correct. (It’s her show, after all.) Then, in a confessional, Sutton comments, “If [Kyle] fails to recognize this, we have an issue.” Indeed, Kyle tends to be self-centered, which is a well-known aspect of her character. She often focuses more on how she will appear and would rather see Sutton take the blame than herself.
When Kyle discusses the situation with Garcelle and Jennifer, allies of Sutton, Kyle expresses her frustration that neither of them supported Sutton during the incident. Instead, they seem to be pointing fingers at Sutton as if a dead squirrel were in her backyard. Garcelle explains that when Kyle remains silent, it causes more pain for Sutton. Kyle queries why this is so, but neither can provide an answer. Fortunately, I have the solution. Essentially, it’s because the show revolves around Kyle. It appears Sutton is upset that Kyle refuses to resolve the issue, yet she also feels excluded from the inner circle.
It seems that a significant part of this season revolves around Sutton’s efforts to establish herself as both a trusted friend and a prominent Housewife. The sisterhood move, the grand fashion show, and taking Garcelle and Kyle to meet her mother were all attempts to achieve this central role. Sutton aims to be the center diamond, but she can’t attain that position without Kyle’s acceptance. Fans might admire her (and many do!), but without gaining Kyle’s favor, Sutton will remain on the sidelines, often perceived as a troublemaker or antagonist. To secure her place on the show and avoid being the one consistently targeted season after season (regardless of deserving it), Sutton needs Kyle’s cooperation, which she currently lacks.
Speaking about Kyle’s conversation at the beach with Garcelle and Jennifer, let’s raise a toast in honor of Jennifer Tilly and her exceptional performance this season! She seemed to shine brighter than anyone else in this episode, and it was truly captivating. Jennifer was always there for Sutton, offering support when she needed it most – like bringing her water and a chuckle after Sutton extricated herself from the other women on the boat. In confessional, Jennifer even mentioned that she understands both sides of Erika and Sutton’s disagreement but chooses to stand by her friend. She even advocated for Sutton when she was having a difficult time and didn’t want to attend dinner. This is exactly the kind of friendship we cherish!
In the peak moment of her season, Jennifer and Kyle have a profound conversation with Garcelle on the beach about Mauricio. Jennifer shares an experience from her past divorce where her ex-husband claimed there was $700,000 in their bank account but only offered her $350,000. She emphasizes that she didn’t accept a smaller settlement because she wasn’t going to settle for ‘Chucky’ money, using it merely for snacks. The matter was then effectively resolved.
The remaining part of the episode felt somewhat underwhelming, except for the extravagant Carnival attire. I must admit, I was quite taken with their daring yet tasteful designs. Boz, Dorit, Kyle, and Erika truly showcased their fabulous figures, while others opted for a more modest ’50s swimsuit vibe. Even the subtler styles were stunning. Kathy Hilton donned a muumuu, questioning if her portable fan needed new batteries. As for the costumes, I initially worried they weren’t attending a genuine Carnival event and this might be cultural appropriation, but later, they did join the celebration. My internal sense of guilt regarding cultural sensitivity was left puzzled, as it didn’t know how to react anymore. It just emitted a wave of snarky comments on Bluesky and cried out, “But her emails,” until it ran out of breath.
Towards the end of the episode, Kyle visits Erika’s home for a discussion about her ex-husband Tom’s verdict. However, this brief conversation doesn’t fully encapsulate their 20-year marriage due to the limitations of a reality TV show. Erika shares that she holds mixed emotions towards Tom – both positive and negative memories coexist within her. She expresses relief at having some closure but acknowledges that legal battles still lie ahead. The fallout from this situation, much like an eerie clown in a horror movie, will persistently reappear, catching her off guard. Erika admits to feeling sad and overwhelmed, as if she’s sinking back into the ground, with the earth pressing down on her like a tomb. Despite the intensity of her feelings, which may not align with societal expectations, they are genuine. Like everyone else, she’s simply trying to navigate each day, seeking solace in life’s unyielding struggle.
After Kyle departs, Erika escorts him out and locks the front gate. She’s now standing alone on a bright, summery August day, with her cabana invitingly calling to her. She settles onto the freshly reupholstered couch and gazes at her pool, attempting to absorb the light and appreciate the positive experiences she’s had this year. As she gazes off into the distance, a female duck descends from the sky, landing softly in the pool without even creating a ripple. Erika ponders where it originated, what its background is. Does it have a partner? Offspring? Where does it winter? Has it ever been captured? Or worse, hunted? Remaining still within the cabana, she eventually feels the need to move and grabs her hair at the root near her scalp, smoothing it all the way down to the end with a closed fist. She can only do this because she’s overcome by the desire to dash towards that duck, dive into the pool fully-clothed, grab it, hold it close, and listen for any secrets it might share. However, her primary wish is to embrace it, to draw its small heart near hers, feeling their beats together for just a moment, to possess its innocent spirit, a feeling she hasn’t experienced in years.
