The production company, The Playmaker, has purchased the global distribution rights for Christina Tournatzés’ movie “Karla.” They are planning to showcase this film at the Cannes Film Market on May 17th. Here, we have the exclusive first look at the trailer, courtesy of EbMaster.
In Munich during 1962, this film recounts the real-life events of 12-year-old Karla, who takes a brave stand against her abusive father by filing charges against him. As she maneuvers through the complexities of the judicial system, she develops a strong connection with Judge Lamy, who emerges as her guiding light during this challenging time.
As Karla hesitated to disclose the complete depth of her hardships, it became necessary for Lamy to grant her the liberty to share her tale in her preferred manner, potentially jeopardizing his professional standing.
According to the statement, Lamy’s unusual decision underscores a moral obligation that surpasses traditional legal boundaries and is “a profound reflection on justice and compassion in response to suffering,” indicating its significance. The case paved the path for handling child abuse victims, an approach that remains a commendable model even today.
The movie is helmed by Tournatzés (director) and penned by Yvonne Görlach. It features Elise Krieps, Rainer Bock known for his role in “The White Ribbon”, and Imogen Kogge, who appeared in “The Zone of Interest”.
This production hails from Achtung Panda!, a collaboration with Studio.TV.Film GmbH and Bayerischer Rundfunk, with additional support from Arte, Pharos, and Shoot’N’Post. It also receives backing from BKM, FFF Bayern, Hessen Film & Medien, and DFFF. Eksystent Filmverleih is the German distributor for this project.
The first full-length movie, “Karla,” was created by Tournatzés, who gained a degree in film and television directing from Macromedia Academy for Media and Design. Previously, her short film titled “Cargo” received multiple awards at international film festivals, with the 19th Reggio Film Festival recognizing it as the best film.
