The numbers are in for the season finale of HBO’s The Pitt, and the results are very encouraging.
According to Variety, the latest episode, which became available on April 16th, attracted 9.7 million viewers over its first weekend. This continues a successful season for the show, which saw a significant increase in ratings throughout its 15 episodes, averaging 15.4 million viewers per episode, as Variety also reported.
The success of The Pitt places it among HBO’s most popular and critically acclaimed shows. For years, HBO was known for high-quality television, famously advertising itself with the slogan “It’s not TV. It’s HBO.” While many shows have gained dedicated fans and positive reviews, The Pitt has become particularly noteworthy. With strong viewership numbers in its second season, it now joins an exclusive group of just six HBO series that have averaged over 15 million viewers—alongside shows like House of the Dragon, It: Welcome to Derry, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and The White Lotus.
Despite the good ratings, these numbers don’t change the show’s plans. HBO already renewed The Pitt for a third season before Season 2 even started. When the show returns, it will have some changes. Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) is leaving, and Dr. Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris) will now be a regular cast member. While there’s no exact release date for Season 3 yet, fans won’t have to wait too long. Season 2 premiered in January 2026, just a year after Season 1, and Season 3 is currently set to debut in January 2027.
The show is starting to face some issues, largely fueled by its dedicated fanbase. As the audience has grown, some fans have become overly protective and are engaging in negative and hostile discussions. This became particularly noticeable after the Season 2 finale, which sparked numerous critical articles and heated debates. CNN even labeled these fans “Pitt bullies” and described them as a new problem within fandoms. While the show maintains a traditional format with regular episodes and longer seasons, the controversy it’s attracting highlights how challenging it is to satisfy audience expectations today.
