For three weeks now, we’ve been grappling with the heartrending tale of mass casualties in The Pitt‘s storyline. Despite the subsiding chaos, it continues to be chilling and emotionally intense. The scene where a tearful Dana consoled Jake after his girlfriend’s death was particularly moving for me – I can only imagine how comforting a nurse like Dana would be in such a situation! However, this show rarely allows for healing or processing, as it swiftly moves on to another harrowing event: The possibility of a measles outbreak due to anti-vaccination sentiment. This sudden change of events is going to be tough on us all.
In reference to Dr. Robby’s mental breakdown, “8:00 P.M.” finds him curled up in the fetal position, repeating the Shema prayer in a pediatric room transformed into a morgue. Despite his crucial role, no one can locate him. It’s Whitaker who stumbles upon him first, and fortunately, he proves to be an instrumental figure in helping Robby pull through this ordeal. As I contemplate the narrow escape from having Santos enter that pediatric room instead, a chill runs down my spine – Santos might never have recovered. Whitaker himself is not particularly soothing, but in this instance, comfort isn’t what Robby requires; he needs to be reminded of his responsibilities. Whitaker stays with him initially but then rises and extends his hand. They all rely on Robby to get up, or else they are in trouble. He doesn’t compel Robby to leave the room once he’s standing, instead retrieving the blanket he came for and exiting, leaving behind a firm yet subtle, “I’ll meet you out there, captain.” This serves as a final motivation that they need Dr. Robby to guide them through this predicament.
After taking a breath and returning to the floor, Robby begins by assessing the situation and praising everyone for their efforts. He truly admires this man. Later on in the show, he comes across Dr. King shedding tears after successfully reuniting Trish with her daughter Morgan. Upon finding her, he encourages her not to apologize for showing empathy and tells her she was “amazing” amidst the turmoil. “I’m so glad you’re part of our team, Dr. King,” he says. Now, I find myself in a similar position, feeling quite emotional about the whole situation.
It’s important to note that what’s being said doesn’t imply that Robby is completely okay. On the contrary, he’s far from it. Much like many hospital staff members, he may not recover quickly following this event. The stress and tension are palpable throughout the episode, and moments like when Robby angrily confronts Gloria towards the end of his shift are clear indicators of this. You see, Robby is usually holding in a lot of his frustration for most of his shift, and when he finally loses it, it’s evident that something isn’t right. It’s as if the breaking point has been reached, especially to those who know him best like Dana and Abbott. In the middle of the emergency department, Robby exclaims, “Jesus Christ, Gloria,” indicating their ongoing disagreement about unscreened blood donations and David’s kill list. They’re both trying to do their jobs – saving as many lives as possible – but his outburst is a clear signal that Robby is on the brink. Despite Gloria’s role, one might think she could sense the tension in the room, yet the outburst serves as a stark reminder that Robby is struggling.
Our fearless leader, Gloria, shared unexpected moments as she reported that the shooter had been subdued – the SWAT team discovered him wounded with a self-inflicted gunshot on the festival grounds. She reassured everyone there would be no more victims. “Words can’t express my gratitude for what you’ve accomplished here,” she stated, thanking them all. However, their work is far from over as they now face David Saunders, who remains handcuffed and injured in a secured patient room. Robby asserted to McKay, “I told you he didn’t do it,” implying that he feels let down by her. To make matters worse, he also accused her of meddling with his preferred approach, adding, “You created this mess; you’ll have to clean it up.” It seems Robby is venting his feelings towards McKay, who was being cautious in the situation. In a different scenario, if things had gone awry, how would Robby feel then? Despite this, Robby appears to be taking out his emotions on McKay.
Gloria announces that the shooter has been neutralized but more work is needed with David Saunders; Robby accuses McKay of causing trouble and not trusting him, despite her caution.
One point where Robby is correct: Resolving this issue with David won’t be simple. The child is enraged and terrified, and his primary desire is to be reunited with his mother. He has no interest in listening to McKay suggest he needs professional assistance. Upon Theresa’s entry into the room, she informs him about the petition and that he will be placed on hold. This does not sit well with him. However, I stand with McKay on this matter. Unfortunately for her, this is not the only issue brewing before next week’s finale: Two police officers arrive to arrest her for interfering with her ankle monitor. She, Abbott, and Dana attempt to justify why she had to drill a hole in it, but the episode concludes with McKay being handcuffed.
Apart from McKay and David, several other storylines are about to reach their conclusions in the next hour. Interestingly, there’s also a matter that might seem unbelievable – the measles. As Dr. Shen (we hope to see more of him in season two) declares the triage area calm, an ambulance arrives with a 13-year-old suffering from sepsis and pneumonia – Flynn also exhibits a peculiar rash. His younger sister Georgia called 911 because their parents were out at the movies. Shen and King are puzzled by the rash, but as soon as Robby enters the room, he identifies it as measles. The expression on his face when he advises calling Public Health due to a possible measles outbreak… It’s hard not to share his sentiment – you can sense exactly what he’s feeling: you have to be kidding me here, because honestly, you have to be kidding me here.
The situation seems to be escalating: Robby and King converse with Georgia, who shares an unsettling similarity with Flynn – she experienced something similar about a week ago. Their family had been in Orlando recently, which raises concerns. Flynn is no longer contagious, but it’s highly probable he has ADEM, a potentially severe immune response following infection. ADEM carries a 20% fatality rate and even if a person survives, there’s a risk of permanent brain damage.
The situation becomes more complex when Flynn and Georgia’s parents arrive, revealing that their mother is not only against vaccinations but also skeptical of most medical practices advised by doctors. Robby urgently seeks approval for a spinal tap to confirm a diagnosis of ADEM before treatment, but the mother, using “Dr. Google” as he terms it, refuses. She expresses concerns about the risks, disregarding three doctors’ assurances that this common and safe procedure is standard. This behavior infuriates Robby, who has just witnessed unnecessary deaths of several people, including his surrogate son’s girlfriend. He loses his temper, shouting at the parents and needing to leave the room to cool down before things escalate further. Shen instructs King to take the parents to see Georgia, but then checks on Robby himself. Even Mr. Iced Coffee can sense that something is amiss. Despite the palpable frustration and justified anger, one wonders if Robby will be able to control his emotions during the remainder of his shift. He has only an hour to try.
Discharge Papers
I really enjoy the traditional banter between emergency room doctors and surgeons, and this story provides a tantalizing glimpse of it. The final victim from the shooting is introduced – Navy corpsman Brian, who happens to be Whitney’s brother, whom we encountered earlier when Kiara and Lupe informed her that her husband had passed away. Despite being shot in the thigh himself, Brian had spent hours assisting on-site with the victims. Unfortunately, he developed an intracardiac air embolism that was obstructing blood flow to his lungs. In a tense situation, Abbott guides Mohan through a perilous operation while engaging in a heated debate with Dr. Walsh. Walsh advocates for adhering to protocol and transferring Brian to a hyperbaric chamber, but this approach would consume valuable time that Brian simply cannot afford to lose. Ultimately, Mohan successfully executes Abbott’s procedure, keeping the rivalry between ER and surgery teams alive!
• A touching instance that almost brought tears: Esme from the cleaning services showing concern for Robby, offering him something to eat. This underscores the importance of everyone in a hospital setting – not just doctors and nurses, but also receptionists, orderlies, cleaners, security personnel – who all contribute significantly; this is another sweet reminder of that.
It appears that Dr. Ellis is the most accepting of Santos’s personality among all mentors, doesn’t it? She also seems to be the one who has to endure the rather uncomfortable situations arising from the working relationship between Santos and Langdon, as they are both dealing with another potential drug overdose case. Tensions certainly seem high between them!
McKay’s father, who is none other than renowned horror actor Brad Dourif (Fiona Dourif’s real dad), makes an appearance to pick up Harrison. Although his role is short-lived, he delivers a memorable line about Harrison: “Chadwick Harrison Ashcroft the Third. A douchebag name for a douchebag guy.” This remark, as you can imagine, is quite impressive.
It seems like Mateo might have feelings for Javadi. He uses his charming dimples to make her sit down before she experiences an adrenaline rush, and he even refers to her as “Victoria”.
• Okay, fine, I did laugh when the clown called the hospital “a fucking circus.” I’m an easy mark!
