One of the longest-running crime shows on British television has emerged as a strong successor to the popular American series Bones. While Bones was known for its weekly case-of-the-week format, it distinguished itself by equally emphasizing the forensic science behind solving complex FBI murder investigations. The show, starring Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan, offered a unique approach to crime-solving through her work as an anthropologist and alongside her team at the Jeffersonian Institute.
While Bones wasn’t the first crime show to emphasize forensic science, a similar series actually debuted much earlier. The BBC launched Silent Witness in the UK nine years before Bones even aired, featuring a team of scientists and pathologists. Silent Witness first appeared in 1996 and is still popular today, with new episodes coming soon to the US.
Silent Witness’s Crime-Solving Is Very Similar To Bones
Similar to the show Bones, Silent Witness follows a team of forensic scientists at the prestigious Lyell Center in London. They’re often brought in on challenging cases – when identifying a body is difficult because of advanced decay, a long-unsolved mystery, or unusual circumstances surrounding death and preservation.
The show features many detailed and sometimes graphic autopsy scenes for those interested in forensic science, as the pathologists meticulously examine bodies to help solve crimes. Though the team behind Silent Witness has seen more changes over the years than the one in Bones, Dr. Nikki Alexander, portrayed by Emilia Fox, has remained a central figure for a long time.
Amanda Fox has been playing her role on Silent Witness since season 8, appearing in a total of 212 episodes – a significant number for a British show. Her character, Dr. Alexander, shares similarities with Dr. Brennan from Bones. Dr. Alexander is a highly respected pathologist and anthropologist who frequently provides expert testimony in court. Her work is recognized internationally, and she uses her specialized knowledge to help the police solve many cold cases.
Similar to the show Bones, each case presents unique challenges, and the investigative team is relentlessly committed to finding justice for the victims. This often leads them to independently pursue leads, which can be dangerous, putting them face-to-face with criminals and risky situations. They’ve faced personal losses and difficult experiences, but the team consistently perseveres, learning valuable lessons about themselves and reinforcing the significance of their work.
Compared to Bones, Silent Witness is generally more serious in tone and style – you can immediately sense this difference even from the show’s music. However, both shows share a similar approach to storytelling. They both use forensic science and, crucially, a sense of compassion to tell the stories of victims who can no longer speak for themselves. The characters in both series, like Dr. Brennan, Dr. Alexander, and their colleagues, are deeply committed to their work and the people they investigate.
Silent Witness Is One Of The Most Successful British Crime Dramas Of All Time
Since it began in 1996, Silent Witness has become one of the UK’s most popular TV shows, in any category. The new 29th season will be available on BritBox in the US later this month, with all past episodes already available for streaming. The BBC has also confirmed a 30th season, a major milestone for the series. With over 260 episodes completed, Silent Witness has now run longer than Bones, which had 245 episodes over 12 seasons. Recent seasons feature investigations presented in two-part episodes, meaning each season tells five separate stories.
It’s remarkable how long Silent Witness has stayed popular, especially considering it comes from a TV industry known for shorter-run shows – even The Good Place made a funny reference to this! While most crime shows could theoretically continue indefinitely with new casts and outlandish plots, Silent Witness, much like Bones, stands out because of its thoughtful and respectful approach to both the genre and its characters. Each new team and every case are treated with care and attention.
Silent Witness season 29 begins streaming weekly on BritBox on April 16.
