The Penguin’s Confirmed Sequel Officially Makes HBO’s Batman Show Even Better

The upcoming second season of The Penguin is expected to build on the success of the HBO show and advance the story within Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. While the first season’s finale hinted at exciting possibilities, it wasn’t completely clear how the story would continue. It’s currently unknown if The Penguin will get another season, or if Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the villain will only appear in future Batman-related projects.

Even so, the prospect of Penguin rising through Gotham’s criminal ranks while Batman pursues him is thrilling, much like the incredible Batmobile chase in the 2022 film, The Batman. However, the detailed look at Oswald Cobblepot in The Penguin series could have felt incomplete if it hadn’t continued beyond HBO Max. There was a risk that all the effort put into developing his complex character would be for nothing if he didn’t appear in future stories.

Fortunately, Colin Farrell’s Penguin will return in a sequel! It won’t be as a second season of The Penguin series, but within The Batman – Part 2. Director Matt Reeves announced the main cast for the film in May 2026, confirming Farrell’s return as Oswald Cobb. This guarantees that the story begun in The Penguin series will continue, making the eight-episode show a satisfying lead-in to The Batman – Part 2, which is scheduled for release in 2027.

The Batman – Part 2 Will Have A Very Different Version Of The Penguin

Beyond just seeing Penguin in The Batman – Part 2, his own show will add a lot of depth to the character. While The Batman presented Penguin as a typical mix of comical and threatening, The Penguin series has revealed the complex layers of his personality, making him a much more interesting and compelling villain.

One of the things I’m really curious about with The Batman – Part 2 is what they’re going to do with the character Oz. He was a blast in the first movie, and even if The Penguin series didn’t exist, his presence would be welcome. But now, knowing there is a Penguin spin-off coming, seeing Oz in the sequel feels like a potential connection, a little reward for those of us who paid attention to him the first time around. It’s clear his backstory – his family, the terrible things he’s done to get where he is – is going to be important going forward, and I’m excited to see how it all plays out.

The Batman – Part 2 Can Make The Penguin Rewarding In Other Ways

Beyond simply bringing back the character of Oz, the upcoming The Batman – Part 2 has the potential to really make The Penguin spin-off successful. The first film did a great job of building out Gotham’s criminal world and the city itself. For example, we saw a much more detailed look at how the Riddler’s flood affected ordinary citizens, something the original The Batman only touched on. If the sequel keeps exploring these kinds of details, it will improve both the first movie and The Penguin series.

Sofia Falcone, a compelling character introduced in The Penguin, quickly became a highlight of the entire Batman crime saga. While it’s uncertain if she’ll appear in The Batman – Part 2, even a brief mention of her would be a welcome treat for fans of The Penguin. The next sequel has the potential to greatly enhance the experience of The Penguin and build upon its story.
