‘The Penguin’ Trailer: Colin Farrell Shoots, Stabs and Dumps Bodies to Control Gotham’s Crime Streets

As a massive fan of DC Comics and the captivating world of Gotham City, I am beyond excited for the upcoming HBO series, “The Penguin,” featuring the talented Colin Farrell in the title role. The Comic-Con panel for this intriguing spinoff from Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” was a true treat for fans, as we were given an insightful look into the making of this highly anticipated series.

Comic-Con turned into Gotham City for DC’s “The Penguin” panel at Hall H.

As a devoted cinephile, I was thrilled when I heard that Colin Farrell, the talented star of “Batman” spinoff series, wasn’t able to physically attend the panel but graciously joined us via Zoom instead. It was an honor to be in the same virtual space as him, along with director Matt Reeves, my esteemed co-stars Cristin Milioti and Rhenzy Feliz, and the brilliant makeup designer Mike Marino. We engaged in a stimulating conversation about our upcoming project, making the experience all the more memorable.

In the latest preview, Colin Farrell portrays Penguin wielding guns and stabs in his quest for dominance amidst Gotham’s chaotic criminal landscape. He is depicted firing Uzis at vehicles and overseeing drug transactions at his Iceberg Lounge. Sofia Falcone (Milioti), the offspring of the late crime boss Carmine Falcone, emerges from Arkham Asylum with determination to challenge Penguin for rule over Gotham.

“He expresses his viewpoint in the trailer that the world isn’t fair to those who are truthful, and he describes America as a place where one needs to hustle to get ahead.”

Marino’s penguin prosthetics were highly commended by Farrell for enabling the transformation. Marino revealed that his concept of the Penguin’s obese, scarred appearance was influenced by Harvey Weinstein and wounded birds. (Or) Farrell appreciated Marino’s penguin prosthetic creations which played a crucial role in transforming him into the character. Marino disclosed that his inspiration for designing Penguin’s overweight, scarred look came from Harvey Weinstein and injured birds.

Marino shared his observation about Oz during a live interview, mentioning that they have worked together before. He expressed that Oz’s personality is underdeveloped and has the potential to be more than what he currently presents. In simpler terms, “Oz is not fully realized as a person. There’s room for growth in his character.” Regarding Oz’s physical appearance, Marino praised his natural features, stating that they provide an excellent base for makeup artists to enhance rather than hide. “His face is perfect for makeup. It’s a blank canvas with a small nose, allowing artists to add details and bring out the best features.”

The eight-episode series “The Penguin,” featuring Farrell’s chilling portrayal of the villain, will debut on HBO on September 19. This spinoff follows the events of “The Batman” and is set a week after the movie’s conclusion.

The story focuses on Oz Cobb, also known as the Penguin, a notorious crime boss with a lethal umbrella obsession, who ascends to power in Gotham City’s criminal underworld following the conclusion of “The Batman.” Farrell’s acclaimed portrayal in “The Batman,” which involved extensive prosthetics, received rave reviews from critics and comic book enthusiasts.

In the TV series “The Penguin,” Milioti portrays Sofia Falcone, Feliz takes on the role of Penguin’s young driver Victor Aguilar, Michael Kelly plays Johnny Vitti, the head of the Falcone crime family. Shohreh Aghdashloo stars as Nadia Maroni, Deirdre O’Connell acts as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown depicts mob boss Salvatore Maroni, James Madio is Milos Grapa, Scott Cohen portrays Luca Falcone, Michael Zegen plays Alberto Falcone, Carmine’s son, Theo Rossi becomes Julian Rush, and Carmen Ejogo interprets the character of Eve Karlo.

Towards the end of “The Batman,” released in 2022, the Riddler (Paul Dano) executes his plan and explodes the seawall protecting Gotham with a string of bombs. Consequently, the city is submerged under water. However, Robert Pattinson’s Batman manages to apprehend the villain and safeguard the mayor-elect, Bella Reál, from Riddler’s henchmen. In the chaos, the Penguin (John Turturro) manages to elude capture, leaving a power void in Gotham’s criminal underworld following the demise of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro’s mob boss).
