The Penguin Mid-Season Trailer Sparks A War For Gotham City's Underworld

As a seasoned gamer of life who’s navigated more than my fair share of crime-ridden virtual worlds, I can tell you that The Penguin on HBO is giving me some serious vibes of a gritty, gangster game I once played. Colin Farrell’s Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, the titular character, is a mastermind manipulator, pulling the strings in Gotham City’s underbelly. But the real wild card here is Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone.

When you need Batman most, it seems like he’s nowhere around. HBO’s The Penguin is a spin-off from the world of Batman, and in this storyline, there’s chaos brewing between the Falcone and Maroni crime clans. Oswald “Oz” Cobb (played by Colin Farrell) orchestrated the entire conflict to ascend to the throne as the ruler of Gotham City. However, a new mid-season trailer for The Penguin reveals that Oz faces a tougher adversary in Sofia Falcone (portrayed by Cristin Milioti), who claims the rightful inheritance of the Falcone family’s empire.

In a clever deception, Oz led Sofia to believe for a while that he was supporting her bid for leadership within the Falcone family. However, what he didn’t disclose was the tragic incident where he had lost control and killed her brother, Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen). Now, with the truth revealed, Sofia is determined to take revenge on Oz.

The trailer indicates that Oz and Sofia will each amass or maintain their own supporters throughout the final four episodes of this miniseries, and as the conflict over Gotham City intensifies, these factions are inexorably drawn together. This predicament seems ripe for intervention by some wealthy individual with a bat-themed costume.

Sofia might boast the popularity and reputation, but this battle seems to be Oz’s to falter. He’s successfully set three prominent criminals in the city against one another. Regrettably for the Penguin, he’s managed to create quite a few new adversaries along the way. This could potentially result in some unexpected partnerships working against him in the near future.

The Penguin airs weekly on HBO and Max, with the Season 1 finale arriving on November 10.
