‘The Penguin’ Comic-Con Activation Evacuated After Fire Breaks Out on Roof

As a dedicated fan of comic books and pop culture events, I was thrilled to attend the San Diego Comic-Con activation for HBO’s highly anticipated series “The Penguin.” The immersive experience promised to transport us inside the world of Gotham City’s most notorious villain, Oswald Cobblepot.

On Friday evening, a fire erupted atop the San Diego Comic-Con venue where “The Penguin” HBO activation was taking place. The blaze resulted in an evacuation of the site during a press preview around 7:30 PM. Media personnel, including those from EbMaster, were safely ushered out by authorities.

I had the privilege of being part of an intricately designed setup that transported visitors right into the Iceberg Lounge, featured in the 2022 movie “The Batman.” In this spin-off production, Colin Farrell once again brought the menacing character of Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin, to life.

Fire and police authorities led several individuals who took part in “The Penguin” project out of the building safely.

I was there as at least four fire trucks swiftly arrived on the scene within just a few minutes, joined by the San Diego Police who efficiently cleared the area for us.

HBO’s spokespersons were silent upon our inquiry for a statement. The attendees at the convention seemed unharmed based on initial observations.

At Comic-Con, DC Comics went all out with their marketing for “The Penguin” series, making it their most extravagant promotion to date. Filming started in Spring 2023 but was put on hold due to the writers’ and actors’ unions’ strikes. Production resumed last November, and you can expect the show to debut on Max this autumn, under HBO’s banner.

This is an ongoing story and will be updated as more information comes in.
