I’ve been a huge fan of The Outlast Trials for ages, and I’m seriously hyped for the next update! Red Barrels is adding something totally new on October 21st – an optional PvP mode called Invasion. From what I’ve seen, it’s not just about fighting other players, it’s designed to make the whole game even more terrifying and really mess with your head. It’s going to add a whole new level of paranoia, and I can’t wait to try it!
Dedicated players are familiar with ‘impostors’ – characters who look like other players but act violently. While experienced players can usually spot them by their distinctive laugh, impostors have become more cunning since the game’s release. However, a new game mode called Invasion is set to significantly change how impostors work.
Okay, so when Invasion rounds happen, things get crazy! Up to four players from the enemy team join as impostors. They basically sneak into our game disguised as one of us and they’re packing a kitchen knife! While they’re waiting to jump in, they can watch us using the security cameras, which is super annoying. But we can fight back and break those cameras if we’re quick enough. It’s a total mind game!
The impostors’ job is to secretly ruin the mission for everyone else. They no longer have their telltale laughs, making it harder to identify them. Now, impostors can also unlock special abilities to help them move quickly, disguise themselves, and eliminate players more effectively. Towards the end of each round, all impostors become active, creating a final burst of mayhem. As a little extra detail, impostors can briefly hear a victim’s voice chat right before taking them out.
I got to try out the new game mode early, and it was the most frightening experience I’ve had in the game so far. It was also surprisingly funny – the kind of laughter that comes from being really stressed and scared. Every round creates a really paranoid atmosphere. Even teaming up with other players felt unsettling, because you couldn’t be sure if they were secretly the enemy in disguise. I constantly worried about turning my back on them.
The new game mode is expected to be popular with players. It’s part of a major update that includes an in-game shop, fresh missions, and the yearly Halloween event, Geister. For the first time, players can also earn rewards by watching streams on Twitch. This update will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 on October 21st.
