The Oscars ‘Messed Up’ by Excluding Shannen Doherty From In Memoriam, Says ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Co-Star Jennie Garth

2025’s Oscars faced criticism as it failed to recognize actors like Michelle Trachtenberg, Tony Todd, Olivia Hussey, and Shannen Doherty from “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Jennie Garth, a fellow cast member, expressed her disapproval when asked by TMZ, labeling the omission as “unfair” or “messed up.” She further suggested that perhaps the Academy should issue an apology to Doherty’s family for this oversight.

Garth and Doherty gained fame simultaneously as the main stars of “Beverly Hills, 90210.” They both appeared in four consecutive seasons, but Doherty left the show before Season 5. Conversely, Garth stayed for all ten seasons. In later years, they reprised their roles as Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh respectively, in the revival of “90210” on The CW.

Shannen Doherty passed away in July 2024, following a battle with breast cancer that was first diagnosed in 2015. In the summer of 2023, she publicly shared that the cancer had metastasized to her brain and she was undergoing radiation treatment. Prior to her demise, she gained widespread acclaim as a podcast host due to “Let’s Be Clear With Shannen Doherty,” where she candidly discussed how cancer affected her personal experiences.

Throughout her illustrious acting career, Doherty gained fame for her roles in popular TV shows like “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed.” However, she also shone in more than a dozen films including “Heathers,” “Mallrats,” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” among others. A week prior to the Oscars, Doherty was recognized posthumously at the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ In Memoriam tribute.

Michelle Trachtenberg, who was known for her roles in “Harriet the Spy” and “Gossip Girl,” passed away just days before this year’s Oscars ceremony. Unfortunately, she was not included in the In Memoriam segment during the awards show. Other notable figures omitted from the tribute include Tony Todd, Chance Perdomo, Alain Delon, Tony Roberts (from “Annie Hall”), Linda Lavin, James Darren, Mitzi Gaynor, Martin Mull, documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, and Olivia Hussey, who starred in “Romeo and Juliet.

Among those honored in the In Memoriam tribute were David Lynch, Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones, and Donald Sutherland, along with others. Prior to the playing of this tribute, Gene Hackman, who passed away a few days before the Oscars, received a special acknowledgment from Morgan Freeman.
