The Original John Wick Was Saved By A Surprising Producer

As a gamer with an eye for Hollywood lore, I can’t help but marvel at the intriguing tale of John Wick and Eva Longoria. Ten years ago, who would have thought that this action masterpiece, now a cornerstone of cinematic history, was teetering on the brink of nonexistence? It’s almost surreal to imagine a world without Keanu Reeves’ iconic portrayal of John Wick or the exhilarating gun battles that have become synonymous with this franchise.

10 years ago today, on October 24th, the release date of John Wick was celebrated – a film that significantly boosted Keanu Reeves’ career and is often considered one of the best action movies ever made. However, many people may not realize just how close the project came to never being made, if it wasn’t for Eva Longoria, an actress who transitioned into filmmaking, stepping in.

During an interview with Business Insider, Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, shared that Longoria played a crucial role in keeping the movie afloat financially when funds for the project were uncertain prior to filming.

As a devoted fan looking back, I can’t forget that fateful moment when, with just days left, we were facing a staggering loss of around six million dollars due to a setback in gap financing. We were self-financing our project to secure the bond, but one investor unfortunately failed to gather the necessary funds on time. In a heroic move, [Longoria] stepped up and provided the crucial gap financing – just hours before we were about to shut down the production and abandon the movie.

Later on, Longoria joined the project when her agency, CAA, presented its artists with an opportunity to finance the film. She provided the $6 million needed, earning her first significant producer credit. Given that the film has led to several sequels and a forthcoming spin-off titled Ballerina, Longoria’s investment has proven to be quite profitable.

Stoyanskii shared the method by which he, along with unaccredited collaborator David Leitch, discovered Longoria’s involvement in the project.

“[Producer Basil Iwanyk] took us out to dinner, and we were laughing about all the bullshit that happened, and he said: ‘By the way, funny story, you know who gap financed you? Eva Longoria.’ We were like, ‘What?!'”

It’s possible that a fifth installment of the John Wick series could still happen, even though Chapter 4 ended as a finale. In the interim, a film titled From the World of John Wick: Ballerina will hit theaters on June 6, 2025. Furthermore, plans are underway for a spin-off movie focusing on Donnie Yen’s character, Caine.
