As a long-time fan and supporter of Ready at Dawn, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness as I write this. Their work on games like The Order: 1886, God of War PSP titles, Lone Echo, and Lone Echo 2 has been nothing short of spectacular. They’ve managed to create immersive, engaging experiences that have transported us to alternate realities and left us spellbound.
Today, August 7, the studio known as Ready at Dawn, creators of The Order: 1886 and the VR game Lone Echo, will be closing its doors for business.
As a gamer, I just got wind that the studio behind some of my favorite VR games, Ready at Dawn, is shutting down. The news first broke out on Android Central, and later, it was confirmed by Gematsu. According to the report, Meta’s aim to trim down its Reality Labs division budget is the reason behind this closure. Furthermore, it appears that former Ready at Dawn employees are being encouraged to pursue opportunities within Oculus Studios instead.
Known primarily for creating the exclusive PlayStation 4 game, The Order: 1886, Ready at Dawn is also responsible for developing God of War titles on the PSP, such as God of War: Ghost of Sparta and God of War: Chains of Olympus. In 2017, they released the well-received VR game Lone Echo for Oculus. Later in 2020, Ready at Dawn became a part of Oculus Studios under Meta.
In the year 2021, Ready at Dawn unveiled Lone Echo 2. However, by April 2023, Ready at Dawn had undergone a series of job cuts, which were part of larger layoffs at Meta. Regrettably, Ready at Dawn is now among the many game studios that have faced significant staff reductions in the video game industry during recent times.
