‘The Office’ Star Reveals Cut Joke That Made Him “Really Mad”

Brian Baumgartner, known for his hilarious role as Kevin Malone in the hit show The Office, had a joke cut from a Season 5 episode because it was considered too suggestive. Baumgartner played the lovable but clueless accountant for all nine seasons, and his comedic timing is a big reason why Kevin remains a popular character with fans.

Paul Lieberstein, who worked on The Office, recently shared with Entertainment Weekly that the cast was always encouraged to contribute ideas for storylines and jokes. He mentioned that some of his suggestions made it into the show, while others didn’t. He specifically remembered being upset with the editors for removing a joke from the Season 5 episode “Baby Shower.” The cut scene involved Kevin implying he could be the father of Jan’s baby – a secret she conceived through a sperm donor, unbeknownst to Michael. Lieberstein explained he was frustrated by this decision.

Okay, so there was a whole kerfuffle with the editing on this film, and honestly, it drove me a little crazy. There was this brilliant joke – seriously, a perfectly crafted bit of humor – and they initially cut it! Thankfully, they put it back in, so most audiences will get to see it now. It’s a scene where Kevin starts playfully questioning Jan about the sperm donor for their child. She gives this vague, sophisticated answer about it being a ‘very exclusive place,’ and Kevin immediately hits back with, ‘The place behind the IHOP?’ It’s a fantastic moment, and I was relieved it made the final cut.

Baumgartner thinks the humor comes from Hardin’s reaction to the possibility that Kevin was the sperm donor, and what that would mean for their son, Michael. Michael was initially upset to learn Jan had used a donor instead of trying to have a baby with him, but he ultimately decided to support her and the child.

In this episode, Michael was shocked to learn Jan had already given birth without telling him. As Baumgartner points out, the idea that Kevin might be the father, not Michael, makes the situation even worse. For Jan, this possibility is especially upsetting, considering how much she previously disliked Kevin.

The joke was clever and multi-layered, but it didn’t make it into the original 2008 broadcast. Baumgartner remembers the writers explaining they didn’t have a related plotline, and worried it would mislead viewers into thinking it connected to Kevin’s child. Baumgartner disagreed with this reasoning and tried to convince them to keep the joke in the episode.

Honestly, I felt like someone was really overanalyzing a perfectly good joke. I kept saying it was funny and didn’t need to be part of some bigger story! I even argued about it, and I didn’t win at the time, but thankfully they put the joke back in. It’s funny now, because when you watch that episode, that moment really stands out – so I guess I was right all along!

As Baumgartner points out, a popular joke has been reintroduced into the show, which continues to be a hit on streaming services worldwide. The storyline about Michael and Jan’s attempt to have a baby – sparked by their tumultuous romance and famously explored in the season 4 episode “Dinner Party” – remains a comedic highlight. While Michael was initially upset that Jan didn’t want to have a child with him, the “Baby Shower” episode is significant for his character, as he begins to shift his focus and pursue a new relationship with Holly.

The show The Office never revisits the idea that Kevin might be Jan’s baby’s father, suggesting it was always intended as a lighthearted joke. Now that the scene is included again, fans can enjoy it as a fun theory that adds another dimension to the already complicated relationship between Michael and Jan in season 5.
