‘The Office’ Star Jenna Fischer Says a One-Word Improvisation ‘Got Me’ the Role of Pam: It Was ‘So Scary’

Jenna Fischer landed her career-defining role with just a single word.

On their “Fly on the Wall Podcast,” Dana Carvey and David Spade interviewed Rashida Jones, who explained her journey to playing the beloved character, Pam Beesby, across nine seasons of “The Office.” This role has become one of the most memorable in TV history.

For around five years prior to ‘The Office,’ Fischer had been trying out for casting director Allison Jones. When it came time for her to select cast members for ‘The Office,’ Fischer, having built a strong rapport with her, felt comfortable enough to ask, ‘Hey Allison, do you have any suggestions? I’m really keen on this role.’ To which she replied, ‘My suggestion is don’t overdo it. Don’t dress up too much.’

Fischer went on to say, “Then she told me, ‘During the audition, feel free to improvise. My suggestion is to not shy away from being dull.’

Despite finding it peculiar initially, Fischer kept this advice handy while preparing for her audition. Luckily, she did so, as this tip proved instrumental in delivering a performance that clinched her victory.

During the audition process, showrunner Greg Daniels posed questions to Fischer, mimicking the style of a “The Office” confessional.

Fischer remembered the conversation as follows: ‘I had it stored in my mind, and he asked, ‘Do you enjoy working as a receptionist here?’ I found myself momentarily speechless, and all I managed to respond was, ‘No.’ That was all I said.’

As a movie lover, I found it more amusing to contemplate the thoughts I chose not to voice than to actually speak them out. She’s incredibly candid, to the point where she can’t deceive and admit liking something, yet she remains tactful by not expressing further feelings.

Initially, I found it quite jarring when my reaction was so intense, but Daniels later revealed to me that it was this very moment that sealed the deal and landed me the job. (Movie buff perspective: “At first, I thought it was a sudden shock, but then Daniels confided that this exact scene is what ultimately got me cast for the role.”)
