As a devoted fan of The Office, I am thrilled to see its rebirth Down Under! The casting of Felicity Ward as the lead, Hannah Howard, is nothing short of inspired. Having her character approved by Ricky Gervais himself adds a delightful layer of authenticity that has me on the edge of my seat in anticipation.
The Australian version of The Office is set to air on Prime Video this October, with Felicity Ward playing the lead character Hannah Howard. Ricky Gervais, the show’s creator, personally approved her casting and decided to focus on a female lead for the new series. Interestingly, Ward stated that she didn’t prepare at all for the role as she felt Hannah’s style and personality were already in line with her own.
At a recent gathering, as reported by Variety, it was mentioned that Ricky Gervais has given his endorsement for a female protagonist. He seems quite thrilled about this development, to alleviate any potential concerns.
She playfully commented that she’s quite relaxed before the premiere of the show in Australia and the UK on October 18. “The British and Office enthusiasts are like, ‘Whatever you decide to do with it is okay,'” she added, chuckling.
In a different setting, Ward assumes the role of Howard, head of a Sydney-based box manufacturing firm named Flinley Craddick. She steps into the shoes previously filled by Gervais’ character, David Brent from the initial series, as well as Steve Carrell in the American adaptation, portraying an inept office manager.
In simpler terms, Ward stated, “I didn’t do any preparation because the script seemed to highlight all my most annoying traits. I feel like I’ve been preparing for this role my entire life. It seems as though the showrunner, Julie De Fina, must have seen a lot of me before, or perhaps only watched the parts that showed my flaws, and then wrote a character based on those, making it a perfect fit for me.
Starting October 18, viewers in Australia and the UK can stream The Office on Prime Video. However, there’s no official announcement yet regarding its release in the United States. The Australian version of The Office marks another international adaptation of the popular series, following versions produced in countries like Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Czech Republic, India, Israel, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden. Over the years, Ricky Gervais, who owns the rights to The Office, has amassed significant wealth from its success.
As I sit here, engrossed in my gaming sessions, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming office spin-off show! They’ve given the go-ahead for The Paper, and it looks like Domhnall Gleeson from the Star Wars sequel trilogy and Sabrina Impacciatore from White Lotus will be taking on leading roles. Unfortunately, no release date has been set yet, but I can’t wait to see what they bring to this new office adventure!
