GameChat Enables New Ways to Play Socially, All Together
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the latest addition, GameChat! This innovative feature allows me and my global gaming pals to engage in lively conversations while playing games as if we were all huddled together in the same room, despite being miles apart. It’s like having friends over for a gaming session, even when they’re on the other side of the world.
With the simple press of the C button on my right Joy-Con 2 controller, I can start a chat with my friends whenever I want. The built-in microphone lets me talk and laugh with up to 12 players scattered across different locations. Four of us can even share our screens, and if we have a compatible USB-C camera like the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 camera (available separately), we can also video chat, seeing each other’s faces as we celebrate victories or share a hearty laugh during gameplay. Additional friends can join the audio chat too.
Until March 2026, GameChat is available to use without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. However, starting from April 2026, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be necessary for continued use.
When starting a GameChat interaction, users can extend invitations to individuals from their friend roster. Various safety measures are implemented to ensure a worry-free and secure conversation environment, including the option to flag someone during a chat. Moreover, Nintendo understands the crucial part parents and caregivers play in shaping their kids’ online activities, so minors under 16 will require parental or guardian consent before utilizing GameChat. This approval process is facilitated through an updated version of the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls application.
A Multitude of New Features and Experiences
A large, vivid screen that allows smooth motion expression
The anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 boasts a spacious 7.9-inch LCD screen, which operates at full HD resolution (1080p) while maintaining the same sleek thickness as its predecessor. This means you can enjoy immersive, high-definition gaming experiences on the move, complete with sharp graphics that accurately depict character movements and vivid facial expressions.
Joy-Con 2 controllers attach to the system with a “snap”
The revamped Joy-Con 2 controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 system stick magnetically to the console. Furthermore, each Joy-Con 2 controller functions as a makeshift mouse by gliding across surfaces such as tables or pants. They offer versatility in use, including for games that emphasize aiming precision.
A new freely adjustable stand and a new USB-C port
The adjustable angle of the new stand on the Nintendo Switch 2 console allows players to easily customize their viewing perspective. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which only has a USB-C port at the bottom, the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts a port on both the top and bottom. This dual connectivity enables players to charge the system while gaming in tabletop mode using the included AC adapter. Additionally, you can link a compatible USB-C camera, such as the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory, for video chat experiences on GameChat.
Powerful processing speed and graphical performance
The next-generation Nintendo Switch (Nintendo Switch 2) boasts a substantial upgrade in both CPU and GPU capabilities compared to its predecessor. This enhancement results in a marked increase in processing speed, allowing for more sophisticated gameplay experiences. Additionally, it opens the door for more intricate graphics and quicker load times.
Crisp audio quality and spatial 3D sound
On the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the audio quality is enhanced for a more authentic and crisp listening experience, with a broader and more harmonious sound spectrum. Gamers can anticipate a more captivating, spatial sound while playing in handheld or tabletop modes.
Internal storage of 256 GB
On the Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll find a 256 GB internal memory, used for saving digital games and game progress. This is eight times larger than the storage capacity of the original Nintendo Switch. If more space is needed, the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusively utilizes MicroSD Express cards, which boast quicker data reading speeds compared to earlier models of these cards.
Nintendo Switch games are also playable on Nintendo Switch 2
Apart from new games designed for Nintendo Switch 2, the Nintendo Switch 2 console is capable of running games that are compatible with it, which were originally released for the Nintendo Switch. Not all Nintendo Switch games may work flawlessly or at all on Nintendo Switch 2. To connect and use Joy-Con controllers, as well as other peripherals like the Pro Controller, wirelessly with Nintendo Switch 2, you can link them to the system. For details regarding which Nintendo Switch games and accessories are compatible with Nintendo Switch 2, please refer to the official Nintendo website.
The new Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
Through linking the potential Nintendo Switch 2 Dock with a television, users can project high-definition video in 4K quality and enjoy gaming at a swift 120 frames per second, provided that the games and televisions being used are compatible.
Multiple people can play one title with GameShare
Using GameShare, a fresh feature on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, gamers can enjoy playing the same title collectively even if they don’t personally own the game. If someone possesses a Nintendo Switch 2 or compatible system and the specific game, they can extend invitations for others to join in a shared gaming session via local multiplayer using their Nintendo Switch 2 or original Nintendo Switch consoles. In addition, GameShare allows for online play between Nintendo Switch 2 systems when paired with GameChat, enabling players to engage in real-time discussions while simultaneously playing the same game together.
Virtual game cards add benefits to digital games
Using virtual game cards, gamers conveniently handle all their digitally acquired titles, allowing play across two distinct platforms or even sharing games. The virtual game card interface displays all digital games bought using a Nintendo Account, making navigation and system loading effortless. Once loaded onto a device, the game can be played offline, and multiple users on that system can access it. Moreover, members within the same Nintendo Account family group can exchange digital games as virtual game cards via local wireless communication.
Nintendo Switch Online
On the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch Online functionality will be introduced. This includes features like GameChat in addition to existing online features. For a temporary period, all Nintendo Switch 2 users can enjoy GameChat without a Nintendo Switch Online membership due to the GameChat Open-Access phase which lasts until March 2026’s end. After this period, a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be necessary for accessing GameChat.
Moreover, at the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics will become accessible. Those with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and a Nintendo Switch 2 system can look forward to playing a variety of Nintendo GameCube games in improved image quality and higher resolution compared to their original releases. The initial collection of classic games at launch will consist of F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and SOULCALIBUR II.
Lastly, a wireless controller modeled after the original GameCube controller will be available for purchase exclusively by subscribed Nintendo Switch Online members.
Variety of accessibility features
Beyond the current accessibility offerings on Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 expands its support for diverse gaming styles by introducing a plethora of novel accessibility settings. These include options to customize font sizes, activate screen reading functionality, and implement speech-to-text features within GameChat.
Safe and secure game experience on Nintendo Switch 2
Using the Nintendo Switch Parental Control app, parents can effortlessly monitor and guide their kids’ gaming activities. They can use their smartphones to see what games their children are playing or impose daily usage time limits. For youngsters under 16, GameChat requires parental or guardian approval on the app before they can start a conversation. This feature allows parents and caregivers to control and ensure a secure chat environment for their kids.
Starting April 9, 2025, you’ll have the opportunity to pre-order the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 from selected merchants across North America.
