In the eighth episode of Severance Season 2, Sissy conveys to Harmony that her mother would have found comfort or peace within the Nine – this being her interpretation.
In the most recent installment of Severance, we follow Harmony Cobel as she travels to a place called Salt’s Neck, having previously avoided an encounter with Helena during the season. Upon arrival, she meets up with Hampton, a colleague from the town’s ether mill where they used to work together. Later, she pays a visit to Sissy, who is believed to be her aunt.
Instead of finding it pleasant, Harmony’s conversation with Sissy about Charlotte Cobel’s passing is heavy. Sissy expresses that there was a sense of relief in her eyes from Charlotte being freed from her pain. If only Charlotte had been a follower, perhaps she would have found comfort in the belief system known as The Nine.
As a devoted follower, I’ve noticed “The Nine” cropping up before, and it seems to be a crucial aspect of Lumon’s deeply ingrained ideology.
Severance’s Nine Core Principles explained
Whenever Sissy refers to “The Nine”, she’s actually talking about the fundamental values that every employee at Lumon Industries, as well as those who align with the Eagan family, should uphold. These core principles consist of nine key aspects.
- Vision
- Verve
- Wit
- Cheer
- Humility
- Benevolence
- Nimbleness
- Probity
- Wiles
Beyond the Four Temperaments, the Core Principles serve as a strong base for any former employee, and an ideal equilibrium to pursue in daily living. These principles are found in both the Compliance Manual and The Macrodata Refiner’s Training Manual, and Irving mentioned that his preferred principle was ‘Cheer’ during Season 1.
Throughout the series, they’ve often been mentioned; when Mark attempted to step into Ms. Casey’s spot in the break room, Ms. Cobel remarked that it wasn’t “an essential rule, but nice.”
OR
Repeatedly, they’ve popped up in the series; as Mark made an effort to substitute for Ms. Casey in the break room, Ms. Cobel commented that it wasn’t “a fundamental rule, but kind.
In Harmony’s household, a needlepoint frame showcased the nine principles alongside Mark’s Outie, and these items played a significant role in her altar dedicated to Kier. Additionally, Helena was instructed by Jame Eagan to repeat these principles daily, as mentioned in Season 1 finale.
