If the rumors are true and we’re looking at both a console and a handheld, I can’t help but be reminded of my childhood days, lugging around a Game Boy while dreaming of coming home to play on the NES.

As per Windows Central reports, Microsoft appears to be adopting a two-pronged strategy in the Xbox hardware market, much like with the Series X and S. This strategy allegedly involves developing a successor to the Series X in a traditional style, alongside a portable gaming device that resembles the Steam Deck.
At this point, it remains uncertain what the final design of this method will be, but if it resembles the Steam Deck, gamers should expect to play their digital acquisitions and seamlessly switch between the portable device and console. Unlike the 3DS and Wii U, or Vita and PS3, there’s a good chance that it won’t have a separate ecosystem. There’s also a possibility that it could emulate the Switch by having both its portable and console components functioning in harmony.
Microsoft independently announced that it will commemorate both Xbox and Halo reaching their 25th years in 2026, apart from this update. This ongoing gaming era has been peculiar due to developers still producing games for previous-gen consoles. The controversy surrounding the PS5 Pro’s price has caused some discomfort within the conventional console generation timeline.
It was revealed last year that internal documents concerning Xbox’s proposed mid-generation update had been leaked, with an intended launch in October 2024 suggested. However, Microsoft has since stated that these plans are no longer current, but they are indeed going forward with the release of a digital-only version of the Xbox Series X.
