The New Mutants Director Slams His Own Marvel Movie: ‘So Unfulfilling’ (Exclusive)

Despite being a Marvel movie, The New Mutants wasn’t very well-received by audiences or critics – even its director, Josh Boone, has spoken negatively about it. 20th Century Fox attempted a horror film featuring characters from the New Mutants comic book team, but it didn’t quite hit the mark. Critics gave it a low 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences weren’t much more impressed, giving it a 55% score.

Josh Boone, the writer and director of The New Mutants, recently criticized his 2020 film, calling it disappointing. While discussing his new movie, Regretting You, in an interview with TopMob, Boone revealed just how difficult making The New Mutants had been.

The writer and director shared that making the movie was a very difficult experience. Its release during the COVID-19 pandemic hurt ticket sales. Additionally, the sale of 20th Century Fox to Disney around the same time caused significant delays and contributed to the director’s feeling that the film wasn’t as satisfying as they’d hoped.

It was a really difficult experience because of everything that happened during production. The studio changed ownership mid-shoot, and then the pandemic hit right as they were planning the release. Despite having a great time with the cast and crew, and working on the project for years, the whole process ultimately felt disappointing.

TopMob told Boone that Marvel Studios plans to feature Mutants more prominently in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. He then asked Boone if he’d be interested in returning to the world of comic book movies to potentially work on a Mutants-related project.

Boone confessed he wasn’t able to fully realize his vision for The New Mutants, and due to all the problems the film faced, he’d prefer to avoid making it again.

We weren’t able to fully realize our vision for the film. We only completed about half of what we originally intended, and the pandemic severely impacted its release. Honestly, I’d prefer to just move on and not revisit the project.

We’ve already seen hints of mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with characters like Deadpool, Wolverine, Professor X, and Ms. Marvel. But after the current storyline, the Multiverse Saga, wraps up with Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel Studios is predicted to fully introduce and explore the world of mutants.

Marvel Studios is currently developing a new X-Men movie. Jake Schreier is set to direct, following his work on Thunderbolts, which didn’t perform well financially for Marvel.

Will the MCU Create Its Own New Mutants Movie?

Given the limited presence of the X-Men and mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, Marvel Studios is expected to give them significant attention in Phases 7 and 8, and likely beyond. As the most famous and important mutant team in Marvel, the studio will probably prioritize establishing the X-Men before exploring other mutant storylines.

As a huge MCU fan, I’m already so excited for the Mutant Saga! It seems pretty likely to me that we’ll see the New Mutants show up sometime soon. I’m guessing Marvel might start introducing the characters who will become the New Mutants during Phase 7, and maybe even tease them in the upcoming X-Men movie. It would be awesome to see them properly introduced!

We likely won’t see a New Mutants team assembled until Phase 9 of Marvel films, which is currently being worked on. But once that team is established, many fans would expect Marvel Studios to announce a New Mutants movie. Similar to the previously planned film, it would likely feature characters like Magik, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, and Mirage.

Despite his interest, Boone probably won’t be involved with a New Mutants movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he had a negative experience making his previous film.
