As a long-time fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, both on screen and off, I can confidently say that Gladiator remains one of the most captivating historical action movies ever made. With its gripping narrative, masterful performances, and stunning visuals, it’s a cinematic experience that transcends time itself.

Approaching a quarter of a century since its initial release, it’s challenging to find a historical action movie that surpasses Gladiator. With the sequel, Gladiator II, hitting theaters on November 22, this is an excellent opportunity to revisit the original masterpiece. Fortunately, the 4K Limited Edition Steelbook of Gladiator has been reprinted this week and is available at Walmart for just $20 (originally $31). If you prefer Amazon, they also have it in stock, but it will cost you $30.

Initially premiered in 2000, Gladiator featured Russell Crowe portraying Maximus: a man who lost his identity, respect, and self-worth due to the treacherous machinations of Commodus, the emperor’s unscrupulous son. Determined to exact retribution for the slaying of his kin, either in this world or the next, Maximus finds himself compelled to engage in gladiatorial combat within the coliseums of ancient Rome, all while striving for liberation.

In line with most 4K Blu-ray editions, this release comes with an additional standard Blu-ray disc and a digital streaming code for your viewing convenience. It is important to mention that both versions of the movie – the original theater cut and the unrated version featuring more graphic scenes – can be accessed. For added value, you’ll enjoy these special features:

  • Audio commentary by Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe
  • The Scrolls of Knowledge feature
  • Deleted scenes with select commentary tracks by Ridley Scott
  • Visions from Elysium feature
  • Strength and honor: Creating the world of Gladiator
  • Image and design: Storyboard, costume design, and photo galleries
  • Abandoned sequences
  • The Aurelian Archives: My Gladiator Journey by Spencer Treat Clark

On its initial release, the movie “Gladiator” was a massive success, both critically and financially, earning an impressive $465.4 million globally in the cinemas. At the Oscars, it won five awards, among them Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe’s portrayal. The sequel to this film, titled “Gladiator 2,” is set to premiere on November 22, featuring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington in the lead roles.
