The Mummy, originally conceptualized in the early 20th century, has consistently been one of the most successful and financially rewarding movie monsters. Now, Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin is revisiting the tale with a fresh, dark perspective. This upcoming horror film, produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, is generating buzz for its unique take on this classic story, departing from the action/adventure style of more recent The Mummy adaptations.
The most famous iterations of “The Mummy” are those featuring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz from the late ’90s, but Universal Pictures re-launched the series again in 2017 with Tom Cruise taking the main role. This was intended as the start of the studio’s planned “Dark Universe,” which aimed to gather many classic monsters into a common storyline, however, this concept never materialized. The contemporary remakes received varying opinions, but it appears that Cronin is avoiding the mistakes that Alex Kurtzman’s films encountered.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Is Going To Be A Proper Horror Movie
There Should Be A Solid Atmosphere Of Horror That’s Been Missing Recently
So far, specific details about the film adaptation of Cronin’s “The Mummy” haven’t been fully revealed yet, but it appears this version will deviate considerably from previous renditions of the tale. Unlike the 1999 and 2017 adaptations that emphasized action and adventure, this new cinematic interpretation is shaping up to be a horror movie. This shift back to the horror genre feels authentic because, at their core, mummies carry an inherently terrifying essence. Therefore, it’s logical that Cronin’s “The Mummy” would aim to capitalize on this fear-inducing aspect of the classic folklore tale.
Information regarding the remake of “The Mummy” is still limited, however, it has been verified that Jack Reynor from “Midsommar” will headline the impressive cast alongside Laia Costa, May Calamawy, and Veronica Falcon. These are highly recognized actors in the horror genre, which hints at a possible return to its terrifying origins for the monster reboot.
The Mummy Hasn’t Been In A Real Horror Movie Since 1944
The Franchise Slowly Drifted Towards The Adventure Genre Instead
As a devoted fan, I must admit that the Mummy films starring Cruise were somewhat underwhelming in my eyes. However, the news that a new director is bringing fresh ideas to this classic franchise has me genuinely thrilled! The issue with recent adaptations was that they felt uncomfortably similar and derivative, being released less than two decades after the Fraser versions and maintaining many of the same ambiance and mood. Frankly, repeating that formula for a third time would be unacceptable, which is why Cronin has promised a completely different take on the Mummy in his adaptation.
It’s extremely improbable that Cronin’s The Mummy will relate in any manner to the films starring Fraser or Cruise. Instead, it appears to share a closer bond (at least spiritually) with the Universal “creature features” from the early 20th century. Movies like The Mummy’s Ghost and The Mummy’s Curse seem to be the last pure horror films to follow this formula. It’s heartening to know that the filmmaker is reviving some aspects of these classic movies for his contemporary adaptation.
The Mummy Reboot Returning To Horror Will Separate It From Recent Adaptations
The Sequel Needs To Keep Itself Distinct From Previous Versions
The most disheartening aspect of the contemporary adaptations of The Mummy, arguably, was their absence of horror. Even though it was exciting to reimagine these tales with a broader canvas of adventure, there was consistently something lacking in the more recent renditions. Compared to 1999’s The Mummy, which is an impressive film in numerous respects, the adaptation doesn’t quite capture the essence of what the 1930s monster movies aimed for. It’s hoped that Cronin will be able to skillfully combine these two styles to create a fresh and terrifying viewing experience once more.
