The Most Expensive Netflix Movie Ever Has a Major Problem

This week sees the release of Netflix‘s most ambitious movie yet, boasting renowned directors, A-list actors, and an enormous production budget. However, despite these high-profile elements, the film faces a significant challenge.

Netflix frequently takes on massive film production costs, as evidenced by blockbuster titles like The Gray Man and Red Notice, each requiring a staggering $200 million investment.

Not only is The Electric State, the latest sci-fi blockbuster, the most costly movie in Netflix’s catalog, but it also ranks among the most expense films ever made, boasting a whopping budget of approximately $320 million.

The outcome of this tale depicting a conflict between robots and humans carries significant weight, however, initial feedback indicates that the movie may not be outstanding.

The Electric State has a terrible Rotten Tomatoes score

In simple terms, “The Electric State” has received a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 23% from 22 critic reviews, which implies that most critics are not finding the film to their liking. Here at TopMob, we share this sentiment.

Last week, the ban was lifted, allowing us to review the movie. We gave it a rating of 2 out of 5, labeling it as a “defective Netflix blockbuster”. In our Electric State review, we stated: “The emotional heart was absent, the action and visuals were unremarkable, the lead character was ill-suited, and the villain was dull. Electric State is a wasted opportunity that often feels tedious. It’s unfortunate because the potential for something entertaining was certainly there with the available talent, budget, and concepts.

The skill we’re talking about belongs to the Russo brothers who are the directors, with past works like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame under their direction.

The latest Netflix film, The Gray Man, received a critical score of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it managed to garner a total approval from 90% of its audience.

Regarding the actors on screen, they are Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown. We enjoyed Chris Pratt’s performance, but felt that Millie Bobby Brown was not suitable for the role, as she had difficulty making Michelle’s family scenes believable and lacked conviction as a leader in the film’s latter half, where her inspiring speeches fell short of impact.

Feel free to form your own opinion when “The Electric State” premieres on March 14, 2025. If you’re curious about the streaming service, take a look at our recommendations for top thrillers on Netflix or the latest Netflix series to watch this month.
