As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for both classic and contemporary cinema, I am thrilled to share my perspective on the upcoming movie releases of 2023. Having spent countless hours immersed in the world of films, attending festivals, and engaging in discussions with fellow cinephiles, I feel confident in my ability to provide an informed opinion on the following titles.
Prepare yourself for an abundance of sequels, third installments, and prequels set to hit theaters in 2024. Some of these films were originally scheduled for release but were postponed due to the industry disruptions caused by the Hollywood strikes.
Despite delays caused by actors and writers strikes, film enthusiasts can look forward to a rich selection of movies in the upcoming year. If you’re into superheroes and comic book adaptations, there’s an abundance of options on the horizon, including “Madame Web,” “Deadpool 3,” “Venom 3,” and “Joker: Folie a Deux.”
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited about several upcoming sequels that I can’t wait to see. These include “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” where I assume the frozen terrain will bring new challenges for our beloved ghostbusting team. With “Kung Fu Panda 4,” Po and his friends are back, and I’m curious about their new adventures. In “Inside Out 2,” I look forward to diving deeper into the emotional world of Riley and her inner workings. Lastly, in “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” the epic battle between Godzilla and King Kong continues – may the best monster win! The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes also intrigues me, as we explore more about this ape civilization.
Some well-known directors are joining the lineup with projects such as George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and “Minari’s” Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters.” In September, Francis Ford Coppola will release his long-awaited “Megalopolis.” Meanwhile, Ridley Scott is back with a new installment of “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II,” which has been 24 years since the first film.
Horror enthusiasts can look forward to numerous frightening experiences with upcoming sequels such as “A Quiet Place: Day One” and “MaXXXine.” Towards the end of the year, don’t miss out on “Terrifier 3” and “Smile 2” before Halloween arrives.

Mean Girls (Jan. 12)
As I sat down in the movie theater, eagerly anticipating the long-awaited adaptation of “Mean Girls” (2024), I couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia. But this wasn’t exactly the same story I knew from the 2004 original film. Instead, it was based on the Broadway musical that premiered in 2018.
Argylle (Feb. 2)
In the action-comedy movie “Argylle,” directed by Matthew Vaughn, renowned actors such as Dua Lipa, Henry Cavill, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ariana Debose grace the screen. The story revolves around Bryce Dallas Howard’s character, Ellie Conway, a novelist specializing in spy novels. Unbelievably, Ellie discovers that the characters she wrote about are no longer figments of her imagination – they’re real, and they’ve got their sights set on her.
Madame Web (Feb. 14)
In an exciting new role, Dakota Johnson takes on the title character in Marvel’s “Madame Web.” This intriguing woman is a clairvoyant paramedic who gains the power to peer into the future. To stay alive against lethal threats, she teams up with three other strong-willed ladies: Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced.
Bob Marley: One Love (Feb. 14)
If you’re searching for a moving and melodious film for Valentine’s Day, check out this biopic. In collaboration with the singer’s family, it features Kingsley Ben-Adir portraying the legendary reggae artist. The movie delves into his life and music, spanning from the start of his career to a 1976 shooting at his home and his tragic death at age 36 in 1981.
Dune: Part Two (March 1)
In Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up film, Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, seeks vengeance against those responsible for the downfall of his family, while simultaneously trying to prevent a disastrous future. Joining Chalamet are Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. The new additions to the cast include Austin Butler, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub.
Kung Fu Panda 4 (March 4)
In the fourth part of the cherished DreamWorks series, “Kung Fu Panda 4,” Po the panda (voiced by Jack Black) is informed by Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) that he is relinquishing his position as Dragon Warrior and will instead assume the role of the Spiritual Leader in the Valley of Peace. However, this peaceful transition is disrupted when a new adversary, The Chameleon (Viola Davis), a sorceress with the ability to transform and absorb the kung fu of villains, emerges, intent on causing harm to Po. Sadly, it seems the noodles will have to be postponed for now.
American Society of Magical Negroes (March 15)
In the satirical comedy “Justice Smith Stirs Up the ‘Magical Negro’ Trope” by Kobi Libii, Justice Smith portrays Aren, a young Black man unwittingly joining a clandestine community of magically-gifted Africans. Their mission: to alleviate the unease of white people. Yet, when Aren develops feelings for An-Li Bogan (played by Quintessa Swindell), his client Drew Tarver (Brandon J. Dirden) also pursues her, causing internal turmoil and rule-breaking dilemmas for our protagonist.
Road House (March 21)
Jake Gyllenhaal takes on the role of a former UFC fighter-turned-bouncer in Doug Liman’s forthcoming remake of the 1989 cult favorite. This film originally starred Patrick Swayze in the leading part. Now, Gyllenhaal’s character, Dalton, encounters unsavory individuals at a roadhouse he works for in the Florida Keys, owned by Jessica Williams’ Frankie. Making his acting debut opposite Gyllenhaal is Conor McGregor, who has previously competed in actual UFC matches.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (March 22)
As a movie buff, I’m excited to share that in the upcoming sequel to last year’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” titled “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” my family and I embark on a new journey. We leave behind our Oklahoma home and set off for the hallowed grounds of the original 1984 “Ghostbusters” fire station in New York City.
Civil War (April 12)
Alex Garland, known for his direction and writing of “Ex Machina,” presents this thrilling apocalyptic story set in the United States. The country is torn apart by conflict, with 19 states having seceded. The U.S. government confronts the Western Forces, a powerful alliance between Texans and Californians. The stellar cast includes Kristen Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Cailee Spaeny. As hinted in the trailer, “God bless America.”
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (April 12)
In “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” Godzilla and King Kong are no longer enemies, but rather team up as allies. This film serves as a continuation of the 2021 release, “Godzilla vs. Kong.” Together, these legendary characters join forces to combat a newly emerged danger.
Challengers (April 26)
Under Luca Guadignino’s direction, “Challengers” is a passionate romantic comedy with sporting elements, featuring Zendaya as Tashi, a dedicated tennis coach who has nurtured her husband, Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), into tennis fame. However, after a series of defeats for Art, Tashi enters him in a challengers tournament against none other than Tashi’s ex-boyfriend and Art’s former best friend, Patrick (Josh O’Connor). It soon becomes evident that the animosity on the court is mirrored by underlying conflicts off it.
The Fall Guy (May 3)
In a new action-comedy take on the 1980s TV show “The Fall Guy,” Ryan Gosling reprises his role as stuntman Colt Seavers. This time, Colt is working on a movie set, directed by his former flame Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt. However, things go awry when the film’s leading lady goes missing, prompting Colt to embark on a mission to track her down.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 10)
In the aftermath of Caesar’s demise in “War for the Planet of the Apes” (2017), the next installment of the 20th Century Studios series jumps forward several generations. Now, apes rule supreme. A new tyrannical ape rises to power, constructing an empire. Amidst this power struggle, a young ape faces crucial choices that will shape the destinies of both apes and humans. The ensemble includes Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy, and Peter Macon.
Back to Black (May 10)
Marisa Abela, known for her role in “Industry,” portrays the late, enigmatic singer Amy Winehouse in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s biopic. The movie is told from Amy’s perspective and explores her journey to fame, her struggles, and the creation of her iconic “Back to Black” album. Jack O’Connell and Leslie Manville join Abela in this compelling production.
IF (May 17)
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d be thrilled to share with you an intriguing cinematic experience that piques my curiosity: “IF,” written and helmed by John Krasinski. In this captivating comedy, I, along with the talented cast of Krasinski, Ryan Reynolds, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, embark on a thought-provoking journey. The question at hand: what if our imaginary friends weren’t merely figments of our imagination?
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24)
In the latest addition to George Miller’s “Mad Max” series, titled “Furiosa: A Mad Max Story,” Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of a young Imperator Furiosa, an earlier version of Charlize Theron’s character. The story follows Furiosa as she is captured by Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his Biker Horde. Determined to escape, she embarks on a journey back home.
Garfield (May 24)
In the latest animated Garfield film production, Chris Pratt takes on the role of the main character Garfield, while Samuel L. Jackson brings Vic, a newly introduced character, to life as Garfield’s father. This follows Bill Murray’s portrayal of Jon Arbuckle in the 2004 film “Garfield: The Movie” and its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.”
Hit Man (June 7)
As a movie enthusiast, I’d describe it like this: In this fresh Netflix production from director Richard Linklater, based on Skip Hollandsworth’s 2001 Texas Monthly article, I find myself excited about Glen Powell’s portrayal of a Houston police associate with an unconventional method – he masks himself as an assassin to lure clients. Yet, things take an unexpected turn when I see him become emotionally entangled in the rescue of Adria Arjona’s character from an abusive relationship. With Austin Amelio, Retta, and Molly Bernard joining the cast, this film promises a captivating journey filled with surprises.
Bad Boys 4 (June 14)
Smith and Lawrence, the star duo of “Bad Boys,” are set to team up once again for the next action-packed chapter in their franchise. The third installment, “Bad Boys for Life,” raked in an impressive $426.5 million at global box offices. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will be back at the helm for this fourth film, with Chris Bremner handling the script writing duties.
Inside Out 2 (June 14)
As an avid moviegoer, I’m thrilled to share that in the upcoming sequel, I’ll be joining Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, played by Maya Hawke, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black respectively. Riley, now a teenager, is dealing with intricate emotions for the first time. It’s an honor to step into the roles of Fear and Disgust, previously portrayed by Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling, alongside this amazing cast. The hype around this film is palpable as it sets a new record for Disney’s biggest animated trailer launch.
The Bikeriders (June 21)
Drawing inspiration from Danny Lyon’s photographic work, Jeff Nichols’ film explores the transformation of a 1960s midwestern motorcycle club named the Vandels from a seemingly harmless group into something darker. Austin Butler and Jodie Comer bring to life the on-screen married couple deeply connected with this club, while Tom Hardy delves into the complex character of the Vandels’ fiery leader.
A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28)
In the prequel to the 2018 post-apocalyptic thriller, we’ll explore the backstory of the world where the Abbott family lives in silence to avoid detection by creatures that track prey through sound. Lupita Nyong’o stars in this film, portraying her character’s experiences during the initial stages of an extraterrestrial invasion in New York City.
Horizon: An American Saga (June 28 and Aug. 16)
Kevin Costner, who also helmed the direction and production, as well as co-wrote the script, brings us “Horizon: An American Saga” – a Western tale encompassing the American West’s expansion prior to and post-Civil War. Split into two parts, the first installment hits screens in June, with the second part following in August.
Despicable Me 4 (July 3)
Despite the plot of the new “Despicable Me” film being kept under wraps, it has been announced that Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Miranda Cosgrove, and Steve Coogan will reprise their roles. Additionally, Chris Renaud, who directed the first two installments, is set to return as the director for this upcoming chapter.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (July 3)
Eddie Murphy is back for the much-anticipated fourth installment of “Beverly Hills Cop,” where he once again plays the lead role as a Detroit cop investigating crimes in Beverly Hills. The movie will be available on Netflix approximately three decades after the third film, “Beverly Hills Cop III,” was released in 1994. In addition to Murphy, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton will reappear as local law enforcement officers, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon make their debuts in the series. Completing the cast are Taylour Paige, Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot, and Mark Pellegrino.
Maxxxine (July 5)
In the third and last part of Ti West’s “X Trilogy,” Mia Goth reappears as Maxine Minx, an adult film actor on the verge of her major Hollywood debut. However, when a hidden killer begins targeting on-screen actresses, Maxine’s past may be exposed to the public eye.
Twisters (July 19)
The upcoming film is a continuation of the 1996 disaster movie “Twister,” featuring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as scientists chasing after an extraordinarily powerful tornado. Although specifics about the sequel’s plot are currently undisclosed, Universal has announced that it represents a fresh storyline from the initial film. Lee Isaac Chung, renowned for his work on “Minari,” will helm the project, while Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”) is in charge of the screenplay.
Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26)
In the third installment of the franchise, Ryan Reynolds will once again take on the Deadpool character, teaming up with Hugh Jackman’s iconic X-Men character, Wolverine. This film, which is highly anticipated by fans according to Fandango’s 2024 survey, is the first “Deadpool” production under Walt Disney Studios since they acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019.
Borderlands (Aug. 9)
Eli Roth is the director of the movie based on the hit video game “Borderlands.” The star-studded cast includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Bobby Lee, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, and Édgar Ramírez. In this sci-fi action comedy, Blanchett portrays a enigmatic bandit named Lilith who goes back to her home planet Pandora. She teams up with an unexpected group of allies to protect Atlas’ (Ramírez) little girl.
Trap (Aug. 9)
In their newest psychological thriller, titled “Trap,” director M. Night Shyamalan presents a gripping story. The movie features Josh Hartnett in the cast and focuses on a father-daughter duo who unwittingly become the focal point of a manhunt for an elusive killer during a pop concert.
Alien: Romulus (Aug. 16)
I’m excited to share that I’ll be part of the upcoming “Alien” franchise installment, which is confirmed by Cailee Spaeny herself to take place between the events of the original “Alien” (1979) and its sequel “Aliens” (1986). This sci-fi horror thriller will be helmed by Fede Álvarez, with a script co-written by him and Rodo Sayagues. Alongside me, the talented cast includes Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Can’t wait to join this amazing team!
The Crow (August 23)
In the fifth installment of “The Crow” series, Bill Skarsgard, Danny Huston, and FKA Twigs take on new roles. Directed by Rupert Sanders, this long-awaited supernatural hero movie tells the story of Skarsgard’s character, a musician who was murdered but comes back to life to seek vengeance for his own death and that of his fiancée.
Beetlejuice 2 (Sept. 6)
As a longtime fan of Tim Burton’s unique filmmaking style and the quirky world he created in “Beetlejuice” back in 1987, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear that he’s returning to direct the sequel. The news that Michael Keaton will reprise his iconic role as the eccentric ghost is just the cherry on top.
Transformers One (Sept. 20)
Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jon Hamm, Laurence Fishburne, and Brian Tyree Henry are some well-known actors joining the cast for the new installment in the “Transformers” series. Directed by Josh Cooley, this film is reportedly an origin story set on Cybertron, the home planet of Autobots and Decepticons. Hemsworth lends his voice to Optimus Prime while Henry voices Megatron.
Wolfs (Sept. 20)
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, George Clooney and Brad Pitt team up once again in “Wolfs,” directed by Jon Watts. This intriguing psychological thriller finds the duo playing competitive lone wolf fixers, each vying for the same coveted position.
Megalopolis (Sept. 27)
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming production, which brings together an impressive cast including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, and Talia Shire. According to Coppola himself, this is a modern-day Roman epic fable set in an imagined America.
Joker: Folie a Deux (Oct. 4)
Lady Gaga takes on the role of Harley Quinn in the next project from Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” co-starring Joaquin Phoenix as the title character Arthur Fleck. The duo is joined by a talented cast consisting of Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey. This film promises to be a musical thriller that delves deeper into their intriguing characters.
Smile 2 (Oct. 18)
Naomi Scott from “Aladdin,” joins the cast for the upcoming sequel to the hit horror movie “Smile.” With Sosie Bacon’s character, Rose, not making it through the initial installment, a new leading role is expected. Director Parker Finn expressed his thoughts on potential sequel possibilities, stating, “I believe there is plenty more intriguing material to delve into in the realm of ‘Smile.’ There were definitely areas I intentionally left unexplored.”
Terrifier 3 (Oct. 25)
Art Clown returns with a new holiday-themed entry in the “Terrifier” series of slasher horror comedies. In this installment, David Howard Horton reprises his role as the unsettling clown character, while Samantha Scaffidi reappears as Victoria Heyes, a character from the earlier films in the franchise.
Venom: The Last Dance (Oct. 25)
Tom Hardy is set to reappear as Eddie Brock/Venom in the upcoming third film of the “Venom” series from DC. The movie was initially planned for a summer premiere, and Juno Temple and Rhys Ifans join Hardy as co-stars. Kelly Marcel, who wrote and produced the first two movies, will now direct this installment. Marcel collaborated with Hardy in crafting the story.
Red One (Nov. 15)
“In ‘Red One,’ Dwayne Johnson plays the role of the North Pole’s head of security, while Chris Evans is the notorious bounty hunter called upon for help. According to the plot summary, when Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons), alias ‘Red One,’ gets kidnapped, these two team up for a thrilling, worldwide adventure to rescue Christmas.” Additionally featured in this Amazon MGM Studios production are Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, and Wesley Kimmel.

As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for director Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks collaborations, I am thrilled to share my perspective on their latest project. In this captivating film, “Here,” we witness the sixth time these artistic powerhouses have joined forces. Robin Wright adds depth as a co-star in this intriguing tale that spans over a hundred years, focusing on the life and history of a solitary house and its diverse inhabitants.
Wicked Part 1 (Nov. 22)
As a movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that come November, I’ll be able to witness the first part of the big-screen adaptation of “Wicked,” the iconic Broadway musical. In this version, Cynthia Erivo brings Elphaba to life, while Ariana Grande breathes new life into Glinda. The talented cast also includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Bowen Yang, among other notable actors. Directing duties are in the capable hands of Jon M. Chu, fresh off the success of “Crazy Rich Asians,” and Stephen Schwartz continues his musical magic with the compositions.
Gladiator 2 (Nov. 22)
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Ridley Scott is back in the director’s chair for the long-awaited sequel to his Oscar-winning film “Gladiator” from 2000. In this new installment, Paul Mescal takes on the role of a grown-up Lucius Verus II, who is none other than the nephew of the original story’s villain, Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. The impressive cast also includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, and Joseph Quinn, among others. So get ready for another epic adventure as we delve deeper into the intriguing world of ancient Rome!
Moana 2 (Nov. 27)
The anticipated sequel, “Moana 2,” sets sail in theaters this November, perfect for holiday entertainment. In “Moana 2,” Moana and Maui team up once more to venture across Oceania’s vast waters following a secretive message from Moana’s ancestral wayfinders.
Nightbitch (Dec. 6)
In “Nightbitch” directed by Marielle Heller, Amy Adams portrays a mother dealing with the challenge of her young child exhibiting strange behaviors that suggest transforming into a dog. Scoot McNairy plays her husband, whose frequent business trips leave her alone during crucial moments. Raising a child can truly be a nightmarish experience!
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (Dec. 13)
Title “The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim” introduces the latest cinematic journey to Middle Earth. This captivating tale uncovers the untold history of Helm’s Deep fortress and delves into the harsh existence of Helm Hammerhand, Rohan’s monarch.
Kraven the Hunter (Dec. 13)
I’m thrilled to share that J.C. Chandor helms the project where Aaron Taylor-Johnson brings to life the character of Sergei Kravinoff, a determined Russian immigrant set on proving himself as the world’s greatest hunter. This gripping tale is inspired by the Marvel comic character named “Kraven the Hunter.” Joining him on this cinematic journey are the talented Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, and Christopher Abbott.
Mufasa: The Lion King (Dec. 20)
In this prequel to the 2019 photorealistic remake of “The Lion King,” we delve into the backstory of the title character, the lion, focusing on his bond with his brother Scar. scar later transforms into the primary antagonist in “The Lion King.” Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. lend their voices to portray the younger versions of Mufasa and Scar respectively.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Dec. 20)
In the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog” sequel, based on the popular Sega video game series, Ben Schwartz will once again voice the title character. The new film is expected to delve deeper into elements of the game that haven’t been showcased in previous movies, following the success of its predecessors.
Nosferatu (Dec. 25)
As a movie buff, I’d put it like this: I’m thrilled to see Bill Skarsgård step into another chilling role, this time as the notorious title character in “Nosferatu.” Following his chilling portrayal of Pennywise in “It,” Skarsgård now transforms into a terrifying vampire. In this fresh adaptation of the classic 1922 film, I’ll be cheering on Lily Rose-Depp as Ellen Hutter. She finds herself drawn into the vampire’s dark and obsessive world.
The Piano Lesson (undated)
In 1936 Pittsburgh, post-Great Depression, the Netflix production “The Piano Lesson” unfolds. This drama, helmed by director Malcolm Washington and co-written with Virgil Williams, is based on August Wilson’s play of the same title. The Charles family’s lives are explored in their household, along with a cherished heirloom – an antique piano adorned with carvings created by a freed ancestor. John David Washington and Samuel L. Jackson lead the impressive cast that includes Ray Fisher, Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Potts, Corey Hawkins, Melanie Jeffcoat, Erykah Badu, Gail Bean, Jerrika Hinton, Stephan James, Malik J. Ali, Jay Peterson and Matrell Smith.
