‘The Mohican,’ About Corsican Goatherd’s Battle With Mafia, Sells to Several Territories Following Venice Premiere (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for stories that resonate deeply and evoke a sense of place, “The Mohican” immediately piqued my interest. Having traversed the winding roads of Corsica myself, I can attest to its stark beauty and the resilience of its people – qualities that seem to pulse through this film.

The Brussels-based film distribution company, Be For Films, has finalized agreements for the distribution of Frédéric Farrucci’s movie titled “The Mohican.” This film made its global debut in the additional section known as Horizons Extra at the prestigious Venice Film Festival.

The territories where deals have been finalized encompass Frenetic Films in Switzerland, Splendid Film for both Germany and Austria, Edge Entertainment for Scandinavian countries, One From the Heart for Greece, and Imovision for Brazil.

The company is in discussion for deals for Benelux, Australia, U.S. and Japan.

The French distributor is Ad Vitam.

A story set in both French and Corsican dialects revolves around Joseph, one of the few remaining shepherds along the Corsican shoreline. He encounters a visit from the Mafia who seek to claim his land. Despite the intimidation, he firmly refuses to relocate.

Following an unintentional act of taking a life, intended as a warning, he finds himself pursued relentlessly from the southern to the northern extremes of Corsica during the heat of summer. As time passes, tales of Joseph grow and echo throughout the entire island, largely due to his niece Vannina’s efforts, symbolizing a resistance that was once thought unattainable.

Farrucci mentioned that the movie was influenced by a 2017 documentary he created, focusing on a shepherd residing along the southern coast of Corsica. He perceived this individual as being an exception in his area, similar to the final members of the Mohican tribe.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m particularly excited about the star-studded lineup for this upcoming film. Alexis Manenti takes center stage, with Mara Taquin, Pietri Théo Frimigacci, Paul Garatte, and Marie-Pierre Nouveau rounding out an impressive ensemble cast.

The producers are Céline Chapdaniel and Diane Jassem. The production company is Koro Films.

Pamela Leu of Be For Films expressed: “We found the responses from the industry and buyers following the Venice premiere to be captivating. The film, expertly made and filled with tension, benefited greatly from Alexis Manenti’s impressive acting.

Leu will be attending next week’s MIA film market in Rome.
