Once more, Yui – the talented FromSoftware modder known for his successful Elden Ring seamless co-op mod and the recently unveiled Dark Souls 3 seamless co-op mod – has embarked on another project. This time, he’s working on implementing the same feature in Dark Souls: Remastered.
Earlier this week, Yui unveiled a new modification, showcasing it in a video on YouTube accompanied by his typical clear explanation. He described the mod as one that “erases all multiplayer restrictions, enabling continuous interactions even after death.” In the mod’s YouTube description, he wrote, “Play with friends from the tutorial to the final stages of the game, with synchronized progression and no interruptions or resummoning needed. Invasions are optional and are activated by default.
In this video, Yui’s character in Dark Souls is depicted taking a break at Firelink Shrine, where he employs a “Crystal Eye Orb” to engage in a continuous cooperative play with his friend and frequent collaborator Oroboro. They then team up to battle their way through the opening part of Undead Burg. The video later transitions to the confrontation with Sif, the boss, which they unfortunately fail to conquer. However, they find themselves back at the Darkroot Garden bonfire following a respawn.
The mod isn’t expected to be released just yet, as stated by Yui in an update on his Ko-Fi page. Instead of announcing a specific release date, he mentioned that he hasn’t set a timeframe for now but assured us that the project is almost done. He has been playtesting it with friends to ensure everything functions correctly, and aside from some lingering bugs, the mod seems to be running smoothly. Interestingly, Yui also shared that he addressed several multiplayer bugs in the vanilla game during this process. What a dedicated developer!
Among all of Yui’s smooth cooperative ventures, this is the one I’m especially looking forward to with great anticipation. I’ve got a soft spot for both Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3, but if there’s a FromSoftware universe I can’t wait to explore hand-in-hand with a friend, it’s Lordran. Admittedly, I was taken aback when I learned about this project considering Yui had previously expressed no intentions of incorporating seamless co-op into Dark Souls. Interestingly enough, in his FAQ for Elden Ring’s seamless co-op mod on Nexus Mods, Yui himself posed the question, “Will you create a similar mod for Dark Souls?” and answered with a firm “No.
At first, I pondered if the issue might be caused by a technical hurdle since the game uses a distinct engine compared to Elden Ring and DS3. However, it appears that’s not the problem. Yet, it should be noted that Yui’s cooperative mod is designed for Dark Souls: Remastered, so in technical terms, his original statement still stands correct.
Currently, FromSoftware is preparing for the launch of their unique spin on seamless cooperation in Elden Ring: Nightreign, set to drop on May 29th. Morgan gave it a test run back in February and found it enjoyable but not quite the co-op Elden Ring experience he anticipated. “Nightreign’s emphasis on pure combat and relentless progression is starting to show its boundaries,” he wrote in his preview. “The more adept we became at clearing out enemy camps, rushing to the next one, and enhancing our flasks at churches, the more it seemed like most of playing Nightreign involves hitting various treasure chests with a stick until the real enjoyment kicks in.
