Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 4
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is reimagining a classic Marvel villain, and this change is actually rooted in the character’s comic book history.
Wilson Bethel first appeared as Benjamin Poindexter, also known as Bullseye, in season 3 of the Netflix series Daredevil. He was central to the first season of the Disney+ show Daredevil: Born Again, and continues to be important in the new season. However, Bullseye’s motivations are now more complex. Episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 reveals a shift, showing that he’s no longer simply a villain, and his reasons for acting are much less clear.
Okay, so the latest Born Again episode really threw me for a loop! It turns out Bullseye is… trying to help Daredevil? It’s seriously messed up, and he’s still a total psycho with terrifying accuracy, but it looks like the show is finally pulling from the older comic book storylines. It’s cool to see they’re leaning into that source material with this new take on Bullseye’s motivations.
In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Bullseye Claims He’s “One Of The Good Guys”
The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again kicks off with a shockingly violent scene. Bullseye walks into a Queens diner and deliberately lures a whole team of Mayor Fisk’s agents into a trap. He then proceeds to defeat each one using only everyday objects like toothpicks, silverware, a meat thermometer, and even a crab claw. It’s arguably the most impressive demonstration of his deadly skills we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far.
After the extremely violent fight, Bullseye is seen comforting a frightened civilian, telling them he won’t hurt them and claiming he’s changed and is now working for the side of good.
Throughout the episode, Dex appears to truly see himself as an ally of Daredevil, trying to make amends for his past actions. He seems to believe that doing one good thing can help offset the harm he caused when he worked for the Fisks and, tragically, killed Foggy Nelson.
Driven to finish what Daredevil won’t, Bullseye directly targeted the Fisks, culminating in a shocking ending to episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again—and he might have even killed Vanessa Fisk. It’s unclear what Bullseye’s next steps will be, but this development is particularly intriguing when considered alongside the original comic book storyline.
Bullseye is usually portrayed as a villain in comic books, but there was a time when he briefly fought on the side of heroes, though his methods were still very dark and ethically dubious.
Is The MCU Setting Bullseye Up For A Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers Arc From The Comics?
Considering everything, the MCU’s fresh portrayal of Bullseye seems to be drawing ideas from his appearances with the Thunderbolts and Avengers in the original comic books.
During the first Civil War storyline from Marvel, Bullseye was part of the Thunderbolts team. The team was controlled by those supporting hero registration through tiny nanites, which forced them to work as official government agents. Later, after the Secret Invasion event, Bullseye joined Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers, pretending to be Hawkeye.
Although it was a brief phase and Bullseye generally remained a villain in the comics, the current direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be drawing from this time, as Bullseye is now attempting to assist Daredevil’s fight against evil, even if Daredevil doesn’t want his help.
It will be really interesting to follow Bullseye’s story in season two of Daredevil: Born Again, particularly now that Dex is attempting to be a better person.
Marvel Studios will release new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 on Disney+ every Tuesday night.
