With the recent release of details about Avengers: Doomsday, it’s becoming obvious that Marvel is significantly changing the direction of its Multiverse Saga before the movie comes out. At CinemaCon 2026, Marvel and Disney shared a lot of new information about Doomsday, including the first trailer, story details, and comments from the cast and creators.
Recent details revealed at CinemaCon 2026 suggest that Avengers: Doomsday is significantly changing the direction of the Multiverse Saga. This saga, which includes phases 4, 5, and 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—and films like The Fantastic Four: First Steps and series like Loki—was initially planned to build up to Doomsday and introduce Doctor Doom. However, it now appears the story may be heading in a different direction.
Marvel has already revised some choices it made after Avengers: Endgame, particularly as they related to the Multiverse Saga. Initially, the plan for the next Avengers film was to feature Jonathan Majors as the primary villain, Kang the Conqueror. Shows like Loki and the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were building towards this, but due to off-screen issues with Majors, Marvel changed course and is now focusing on Doctor Doom as the main threat.
The actors in Avengers: Doomsday seem to indicate that the planned Multiverse Saga might not be the main focus anymore. For example, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are reprising their roles as Doctor Doom and Steve Rogers. Several actors from the old X-Men movies, like Patrick Stewart and James Marsden, are also coming back for Doomsday. This makes it even more likely that the movie is changing the direction of the Multiverse Saga.
Kevin Feige’s CinemaCon Comments Imply The Multiverse Saga Is Being Rewritten
At CinemaCon 2026, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared updates about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that suggest a direct continuation from Avengers: Endgame. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Feige stated that the upcoming film, Doomsday, will pick up the story right after the events of Endgame. Variety also reported that Avengers: Endgame will be re-released in theaters with added footage before Doomsday hits the big screen.
Feige didn’t explain how the next Avengers movie will connect to Endgame, but his comments suggest Marvel might be moving away from some of the storylines introduced in the Multiverse Saga. If the new film truly starts immediately after Endgame, then events from shows like WandaVision and movies like Spider-Man: Brand New Day – everything that’s happened in the Multiverse Saga so far – wouldn’t have occurred yet.
The additional scenes Kevin Feige mentioned for the re-release of Endgame suggest a shift in plans. Releasing new footage seven years later seems to be a way of preparing audiences for Doomsday. This re-release, combined with the announcement that Doomsday is a direct continuation of Endgame, implies the Multiverse Saga might not be the central focus we initially believed.
While there are hints that Doomsday won’t completely abandon the Multiverse Saga – characters from Thunderbolts and Shang-Chi will appear, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps already established Doctor Doom – recent statements suggest that Doomsday will primarily pick up the story directly after Endgame, meaning much of what happened in the broader Multiverse Saga might be minimized or less important.
Marvel Seems To Be Turning Doomsday Into An Endgame Sequel
Everything suggests Marvel is aiming to make the upcoming Doomsday film a more straightforward sequel to Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is already reversing many of the changes introduced by Endgame and the Multiverse Saga. We’re seeing familiar faces return – Chris Evans is back as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. is appearing in a new role, and the X-Men have officially joined the main Marvel storyline.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m getting the feeling that Avengers: Doomsday might actually feel more like a continuation of the original Infinity Saga than the start of this new Multiverse Saga. It sounds like Kevin Feige and Marvel are trying to bring things back to how they were in 2019, focusing on the classic Avengers and X-Men teams and kind of sidelining a lot of the new stuff we saw in Phases 4 and 5. A lot is still uncertain, of course, but right now it seems like they’re putting the Multiverse Saga on the back burner.
Whether Marvel’s plan to rework the Multiverse Saga will succeed is still uncertain. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had some disappointments since 2019, like Eternals and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but it’s also delivered fantastic stories such as Loki and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It would be a mistake if Avengers: Doomsday completely abandons everything that’s worked in the Multiverse Saga while trying to fix things.
