The groundbreaking science fiction action series “The Matrix” has moved to a new streaming platform. Starting from June 1, the original three movies in this renowned franchise starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be available on Peacock for streaming. This includes “The Matrix” released in 1999, as well as “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” both from 2003. So, viewers can now enjoy the action and sci-fi elements of The Wachowski’s influential trilogy and make their own judgement about whether “Reloaded” and “Revolutions” truly live up to expectations.
In 1999, “The Matrix” broke the conventions of the cyberpunk genre, making it appealing to a broader audience. It became a massive box office hit, earning over $467 million, and propelling Keanu Reeves into action film stardom. Notably, it received four Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound. Despite not being based on a comic book or existing intellectual property, “The Matrix” set a new standard for action films with its intricate storyline about a multi-layered hero, meticulously choreographed action scenes, and thought-provoking special effects.
The Matrix” is a film that tells the story of a man who discovers his world isn’t real, and he must confront the repercussions of a war against machines in the future.
Have you ever experienced a dream that seemed indistinguishable from reality? What if you couldn’t regain consciousness? How would you distinguish between dreamland and the real world? In a movie, a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) encounters a mysterious woman (Carrie Ann Moss). She guides him to an ominous underworld, where he learns an astonishing fact – his entire life is a fabrication created by a malicious artificial intelligence. Neo teams up with Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne), a renowned and daring rebel warrior, in the fight to shatter the deceit keeping mankind enslaved.
In addition to Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, Joe Pantoliano, Gloria Foster, Marcus Chong, and Paul Goddard, several other actors appear in the first movie. Some of these actors later reprised their roles in the 2003 sequels that wrapped up the original Neo storyline. However, while they were significant for the plot, the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions didn’t leave as lasting an impression as the first Matrix did. Despite earning over $1 billion collectively, their reception was somewhat divided.
Should ‘The Matrix’ Franchise Have Returned With ‘Resurrections’?
As a movie enthusiast reflecting on 2021’s cinematic landscape, I found myself revisiting the iconic world of The Matrix with the release of The Matrix Resurrections, the long-awaited fourth installment. However, the critical response was tepid (earning a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), and it seemed to falter at the box office. With an estimated production cost nearing $200 million, the film only managed to gross slightly over $157 million, falling short of profitability for Warner Bros.
Isn’t the main point at issue whether another sequel for the initial Matrix trilogy was truly necessary? Was it essential for Neo to reappear in a movie that seems overly intricate and confusing, like The Matrix Resurrections? This film appears to be a stylish yet chaotic dream without the storytelling strength that the original trilogy, particularly the first film, possessed. If a sequel doesn’t enhance its franchise or recapture the essence that made the original such a renowned cinematic masterpiece, what purpose does it serve? We’ll soon discover if there’s any more potential in this series when Drew Goddard unveils The Matrix 5, which is currently being developed.
