The Match Factory Takes Sales Rights to Venice-Bound ‘Edge of Night,’ Debuts Clip (EXCLUSIVE)

The Match Factory has taken international sales rights to German filmmaker Türker Süer‘s “Edge of Night,” and has debuted a clip from the film (above). The film will make its world premiere in Venice Film Festival‘s Horizons Extra section, and its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

The film centers on Sinan, a young lieutenant in the Turkish army, who is asked to hand over his brother Kenan to a military court. Burdened by the tragic death of their father, both brothers embark on a journey through a land marked by political unrest. As they confront their beliefs, Sinan’s convictions are put to the ultimate test on the night of the coup. In a country where the state demands absolute loyalty, the brothers must decide if they are ready to face the sacrifices required by their duty and their conscience.

The movie features Ahmet Rifat Sungar and Berk Hakman in the lead roles. It’s both written and helmed by Süer. Matteo Cocco handles the cinematography.

Suer expressed: “The origin of this tale for me lies in the desecration of graves in eastern Turkey. Infuriated locals overturned headstones, suspecting the newly deceased were partisans of a secessionist terrorist group. A local official cautioned that such animosity could strip us of our humanity. I was profoundly disturbed. What fuels this hatred that even reaches the dead?”

Turkey has historically been known for its stark differences, but today, it seems society is more divided than ever. There’s an atmosphere of profound distrust. What captures my curiosity is deciphering what it’s like to exist in such a setting, where everything and everyone can swiftly become objects of suspicion. To reside in a nation where the government appears to expect blind and unquestioning loyalty from its citizens.

The movie is spearheaded by producers Viola Fügen, Michael Weber, and Nadir Öperli. Key production houses involved are MFP GmbH and Liman Film. This film is a joint effort between WDR and Arte, with additional support from Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Eurimages, and DFFF.
