‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identity of Chess Piece: Here Is the Celebrity Under the Costume

As I listen to this heartwarming story of self-discovery and resilience, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of admiration for these extraordinary women. Each one of them has faced their own unique challenges, yet they have all managed to transform their pain into power, their struggles into strength, and their dreams into reality.

Heads up! I’m about to spill the beans on Season 12, Episode 5 of “The Masked Singer,” titled “Barbie Night,” that aired on October 23rd on Fox.

In tonight’s episode of “The Masked Singer”, it was revealed that the celebrity behind the Chess Piece mask was none other than Laverne Cox, famously known for her role in “Orange Is the New Black”. Essentially, she was outplayed and eliminated from the competition.

No one among the panelists guessed correctly. Instead, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg believed the answer was Serena Williams, while Ken Jeong thought it was Issa Rae. Robin Thicke opted for Misty Copeland, and Rita Ora stated that Tyra Banks was her guess.

Growing up, I was an easy mark for others to bully. It felt like every aspect of me was a vulnerability they could exploit,” Cox-as-Chess-Piece explained in her Masked Singer narration. “To add insult to injury, I adored Barbie dolls. However, the pain came from not being allowed to play with them. The ridicule and judgement persisted throughout my life, causing me to doubt everything I cherished about myself. So, I decided it was time to take charge of my own destiny. What truly aided in my recovery was what I had been lacking all along: Barbie dolls. I began purchasing them for myself and realized that no matter the age, one can still have a joyful childhood. Even years later. In fact, they even made one in my likeness. Barbie represents limitless potential. She instilled in me and every woman the belief that we too can be anything. Tonight, I’m here to honor all of us women. Every woman out there.

This week’s episode featured Cox belting out Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” during her performance. The panelists, McCarthy-Wahlberg, Thicke, and Ora, were the stars of “Barbie Night,” which began with them being introduced as the best. Meanwhile, a disappointed Jeong gave his rendition of “I’m Just Ken” from the “Barbie” movie off to the side.

In the twelfth season of “The Masked Singer,” Laverne Cox was revealed to be one of the chess pieces, joining Andy Richter as Dusty Bunny, Paula Cole as Ship, Marsai Martin as Woodpecker, Yvette Nicole Brown as Showbird, and John Elway as Leaf Sheep – these are the celebrities who were unmasked on the show.

A week ago, Cox performed “Believe” by Cher, adding this commentary: “I must admit, I’m always drawn to stylish moments. I never imagined I’d be in this position. There were instances where I felt like a chess piece without any defense. Throughout my life, others doubted me. But I had to trust in myself and make daring moves to claim my throne and that significant role that transformed the course of my journey.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that we’re back for Season 12! Nick Cannon is once again our host, joined by familiar faces Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Robin Thicke on the panel. For the second year in a row, Ora has graced our desk, stepping up for Nicole Scherzinger while she’s away. Can’t wait to see what this season brings!

In the exciting 12th season of “The Masked Singer,” I’ve noticed some captivating tributes being paid. To celebrate Mattel’s Barbie reaching its 65th year, an episode is dedicated to her legacy. Similarly, the iconic film “Footloose” is commemorating its 40th anniversary with a special showcase. Miley Cyrus will have an entire episode devoted to her remarkable music catalog, and there’s something new on the horizon called the “Who Are You Fest,” which promises music reminiscent of unforgettable festival lineups. Additionally, we can look forward to a “Sports Night” and a “60’s Night.” Fan favorites returning include the heartwarming “Soundtrack of My Life” and the festive “Thanksgiving Night.

This season, clues will be cleverly hidden within costumes, song selections, and stage performances. The fifteen celebrity competitors will have a “Celebrity Masked Advisor,” comprising past performers like Dick Van Dyke (Season 9’s Gnome), Jewel (Season 6 winner as the Queen of Hearts), Ne-yo (Season 10 winner as the Cow), and DeMarcus Ware (Season 11’s Koala). The “Ding Dong Keep It On” gong is making a comeback, but only one singer from each group final can progress.

12th season showcases 15 competitors donning fresh outfits such as “The Ship,” “Leafy Sheep,” “Woodpecker Costume,” “Chess Figure,” “Bluebell Character,” “Buffalo Dress,” “Showbird Outfit,” “Dust Bunny Costume,” “Goo Costume,” “Strawberry Shortcake Design” and others.

Here were the first Group B performances on Wednesday’s Episode 4, “Sports Night”:

When I got my first chance, I thought nothing could go awry. But alas, everything did. My career faded, finances dwindled, and I was left struggling to manage expenses. Yet, I never wavered in faith in myself. So, I nurtured a hidden talent, and lo and behold, a new path unfolded. Now, I seize every chance to dance the night away because life is beautiful in every moment.

Let me tell you how we first crossed paths. It was at an amusement park, where surprisingly, I was feeling irritable and grumpy. Sitting alone on a bench, I caught a glimpse of her hand, asking me to dance. In that instant, I softened with kindness, playfulness, and confidence. It struck me then that I had found my romantic counterpart. I can’t wait to become Mr. Goo next year. This performance is dedicated to her, the epitome of independent women. The most touching gesture? Before we say ‘I do,’

Wasp’s Narration: “Barbie might have her own dream home, but mine took longer to discover. Growing up, I lived with many relatives – all of them hardworking individuals. There was an abundance of noise and love in that house, yet there was one thing it lacked: my father’s presence. Without his guidance, I felt lost and uncertain about my purpose. When I embarked on my journey as a young wasp with big aspirations, I had to learn self-reliance. Eventually, when I achieved success, I returned home to find all my family waiting for me – even my dad! His words of pride were a revelation, making me feel limitless in potential. Each challenging memory from the house was accompanied by a warm one, but it was there that I fostered my dreams. So, in retrospect, perhaps it was a dream house all along.

My Take on Barbie Clue: I possess a Barbie vanity mirror set in my personal collection, though mine is full-sized.

“In my childhood, I was often the focus of ridicule from others. It felt as if every aspect of me was a target for their taunts. To make matters worse, I had a passion for Barbie dolls, but was denied the chance to play with them. The years passed, and the criticism and judgement continued, causing me to doubt myself and my passions. Eventually, I decided it was time to take charge of my own destiny. What helped me heal and find joy was something I had been missing all along: Barbie. I started buying them for myself and discovered that it’s never too late to embrace a happy childhood, even decades later. In fact, they created one in my image. Barbie represents the freedom to be anything we want to be, and she inspired me and every woman to believe that we can achieve anything as well. Tonight, I’m here to honor all of us women, every one of you out there.
