‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identities of Ship and Woodpecker: Here Are the Celebrities Under the Costumes

As I listen to this soulful rendition of “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verbal, I can’t help but feel a deep connection with the Buffalos. Their story resonates deeply with me, as we both share a common thread – the loss of someone dear.

Warning: Here’s a spoiler about the third episode of “The Masked Singer” Season 12, titled “Soundtrack of My Life Night,” which was broadcasted on Fox on October 9th.

I don’t want to wait, for “Masked Singer” to be over/ I want to know right now, who will it be?

Great news, Dawson! On this week’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” two contestants were unmasked: singer Paula Cole, known for her songs like “I Don’t Want to Wait” (the theme song for “Dawson’s Creek”), and Marsai Martin from the show “Black-ish.

Cole shone as the main performer hidden beneath the Ship costume, whereas Martin disguised himself as the Woodpecker and sang.

Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg identified the Artist as Paula Cole, while Ken Jeong believed it to be Alanis Morissette. Robin Thicke went with Amy Lee from Evanescence, and Rita Ora guessed Sarah McLachlan.

As a film enthusiast, I confess that I wasn’t familiar with the series before my encounter with EbMaster. They intriguingly invited me, and to be honest, I had to momentarily shelve my elitist inclinations and delve into some investigative work. Initially, I tuned in to gain comprehension, but soon found myself drawn into the delightful and joyous aspects of it. Having a fictional counterpart offers an incredible sense of freedom and fun. Truth be told, I’ve grown quite fond of my on-screen persona – the Ship. Strangely enough, I find myself missing her a bit.

Cole expressed that she wouldn’t have participated in the performance if they had given her a “fluffy, amoeba-like costume.” However, what they presented to her was a stunning, grandiose design that resembled some of her mother’s artwork. Despite requiring extra space when moving through doorways due to its size and needing more height, she felt empowered by it and loved dancing in it. She also appreciated the anonymity provided by the mask.

Regarding the guessing game about who plays Woodpecker, Marsai Martin remained a mystery to many. Thicke believed Liza Koshy, Ora chose Keke Palmer, Jeong opted for Quinta Brunson, and McCarthy-Wahlberg picked Tatyana Ali instead.

The show ‘Soundtrack of My Life Night’ kicked off with Buffalo, Ship, and Woodpecker collaborating on Panic! At The Disco’s ‘High Hopes.’ Unfortunately, Woodpecker was eliminated first, followed by a fierce competition between Ship and Buffalos as they performed Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Go Your Own Way.’ In the end, the audience voted Ship out of the competition, leaving Buffalos victorious in Group A and advancing to the quarterfinals.

In the latest season of “The Masked Singer,” I was thrilled to see Paula Cole revealed as Ship, Marsai Martin as Woodpecker, Yvette Nicole Brown as Showbird, and John Elway as Leaf Sheep! What a fantastic lineup of celebrities!

For Season 12, we have the return of host Nick Cannon, joined by panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Robin Thicke. Once again gracing the desk is Ora, stepping in for a second season in place of Nicole Scherzinger.

Season 12 of “The Masked Singer” features episodes dedicated to celebrating iconic milestones: the 65th anniversary of Mattel’s Barbie, and the 40th anniversary of the film “Footloose”. Miley Cyrus will have an episode dedicated to her music, while there’s also a new event called “Who Are You Fest”, showcasing popular tunes from memorable festival lineups. Other themes include “Sports Night” and “60’s Night”. Returning themes are the “Soundtrack of My Life” and “Thanksgiving Night.

This new season introduces clues hidden within costumes, song selections, and stage actions. The fifteen famous contestants will have a “Celebrity Masked Mentor,” consisting of past participants such as Dick Van Dyke (Season 9’s Gnome), Jewel (Season 6 winner as the Queen of Hearts), Ne-yo (Season 10 winner as the Cow), and DeMarcus Ware (Season 11’s Koala). Additionally, the “Ding Dong Keep It On” bell returns, but only one performer during the three group finals can be kept moving forward.

In Season 12, the 15 competitors show off their talents in fresh outfits like “Ship,” “Leaf Sheep,” “Woodpecker,” “Chess Piece,” “Bluebell,” “Buffalo,” “Showbird,” “Dust Bunny,” “Goo,” and others, such as “Strawberry Shortcake.

Here were the final Group A performances on Wednesday’s Episode 3, “Soundtrack of My Life Night”:

‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identities of Ship and Woodpecker: Here Are the Celebrities Under the Costumes

The Ship

Song: “Because the Night,” by Patti Smith Group

Panel guesses: Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan, Norah Jones, Joan Osbourne, Paula Cole

Time capsule message: “I’m thrilled about winning the best new artist award! You truly embody the spirit of a prominent figure in the industry. – LeAnn, 1998.

The Ship’s Reflection: “I feel incredibly honored to have navigated my way into the Group A finals. My instincts have always been my compass, even when the journey seemed perilous. Tonight, I will be performing ‘Because the Night’ by Patti Smith, and let me explain why. There was a period in my life where I found myself stranded, penniless, surviving on a $2 burrito a day – half for lunch, half for dinner. So when the opportunity to perform at an international tour came along, I grabbed it with both hands. The excitement was intoxicating, but I knew I had my own tales to share. I understood that instead of singing someone else’s story, I would rather be driving a rental car, expressing my truth, and taking that leap ignited the wave of my success. And here’s the interesting part – I took a gamble being here, as it’s not typically my style. But the rewards have already surpassed my expectations.

Previous songs: “Pompeii,” by Bastille; “Almost Paradise,” by Mike Reno and Ann Wilson

Previously suggested artists: Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osbourne, Enya, Sarah McLachlan, Kate Bush, Amy Grant, Sheryl Crow

Woodpecker

Song: “Put Your Records On,” by Corinne Bailey Rae

Panel guesses: Liza Koshy, Quinta Brunson, Tatyana Ali

Time capsule clue: Tree trunk.

“Woodpecker’s voiceover:” “I’m absolutely thrilled to be in the Group A finals tonight! My family is cheering me on from the sidelines. Tonight, I want to dedicate a song to them, especially the strong women in my family who have inspired me throughout my life. You see, I grew up surrounded by an abundance of resilience, elegance, and femininity. My great grandmother introduced me to jazz music and Ray Charles, and we would play those records loudly! We were all about vinyl records in our house. My maternal grandmother gave me the courage to chase my dreams, though I wish she could see them come true today. And my other grandmother instilled in me a love for ‘The Masked Singer,’ which we always enjoyed watching together. This show is part of the reason I’m here today. So join me as I put on one of my favorite records in tribute to all the remarkable women who have shared their strength with me so that I could soar.

Previous songs: “Flowers,” by Miley Cyrus; “Holding Out for a Hero,” by Bonnie Tyler

Past Predictions: Guesses included Willow Smith, Cardi B, Halle Bailey, Keke Palmer, Letitia Wright, and Regina King.

Buffalos

Song: “Bittersweet Symphony,” by The Verve

Panel guesses: B2K, Boyz II Men, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Black Eyed Peas

Clue for Time Capsule: “Half-time Spectacle.” “This Half-time Spectacle t-shirt has weathered with the years, much like us. Yet, we can reveal that the performance depicted on it took place before one of the largest crowds globally.

“The Buffalo’s voiceover shares: ‘Can anyone imagine us in the Group A finals tonight? We’re digging deep, that much is true. We picked ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ because life’s toughest moments are when we need to be most unified. As we found success, there was one cowboy who influenced and motivated us the most. He was our everything. He was like MacGyver, always fixing things. But he left us suddenly. It felt like a blow, as if God had betrayed us. We couldn’t imagine carrying on. We sang at his funeral, thinking it would be our last time. But we knew he would have wanted us to keep the herd together. So that’s what we did. And though there’s an empty space in our hearts where MacGyver once was, every move we make is for him. This performance is no exception. We hope he sees us reaching the quarterfinals from wherever he watches tonight.’

Previous tunes include “Died in Your Arms (Just Like That)” by Cutting Crew, and “Waiting for a Girl Like You” by Foreigner.

Previously suggested artists: B2K, Earth Wind & Fire, 98 Degrees, Bell Biv DeVoe, 112, Boyz II Men, Big Time Rush

I was absolutely thrilled by the diverse cast of Season 11 last year. Standing out among them was none other than Vanessa Hudgens, crowned as Goldfish and leaving Scott Porter’s Gumball in her wake. Other memorable performances were given by Thelma Houston as Clock, Chrissy Metz as Poodle Moth, Corey Feldman as Seal, Clay Aiken/Ruben Studdard as Beets, Jenifer Lewis as Miss Cleocatra, Kate Flannery as Starfish, Charlie Wilson as Ugly Sweater, DeMarcus Ware as Koala, Colton Underwood as Love Bird, Sisqó as Lizard, Billy Bush as Sir Lion, Joe Bastianich as Spaghetti & Meatballs, Savannah Chrisley as Afghan Hound, and Kevin Hart as Book. Each of them brought something unique to the stage, making it a truly unforgettable season for me as a film enthusiast.

The TV show ‘The Masked Singer’ hails from Fox Alternative Entertainment. Rosie Seitchik, Craig Plestis, and Cannon are its executive producers, with Seitchik acting as the series’ head writer.
