Warner Bros. has finished assembling the cast for its upcoming project. After a lot of guessing, the role of Aragorn has been given to a new actor.
I was really excited to hear that Jamie Dornan, who I remember from 50 Shades of Grey, is going to be playing Strider – that’s Aragorn, for those who don’t know – in the new Warner Bros. project! They announced it at CinemaCon, and it’s great news. Viggo Mortensen did an amazing job in the original trilogy, so filling those shoes will be tough. The best part? They’ve also confirmed some of our favorite characters will be back for this spinoff, which is a huge relief!
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Confirms Cast
The next movie in the popular fantasy series will arrive on December 17, 2027, and now we know some familiar faces will be back. After keeping fans guessing, Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood have confirmed they’ll return as Gandalf and Frodo.
Lee Pace and Andy Serkis are also back for this film, reprising their roles as Thranduil and Gollum, respectively. In addition to acting as Gollum, Andy Serkis is also directing this new movie.
Dornan will star alongside several new actors, including Lee Woodall from The White Lotus, who will portray Halvard, and Kate Winslet, who will play Marigol, the enigmatic wife of the unusual character Tom Bombadil. Her casting was recently confirmed, despite some fan speculation.
Anya Taylor-Joy was rumored to be joining the cast, but her name wasn’t included in the latest official announcements. With the role of Aragorn being recast, many fans thought she might take over the part of Arwen Undómiel from Liv Tyler, who played her in the original movies.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum returns viewers to the world of Middle-earth in a new story. Though it’s been nearly thirty years since the original The Lord of the Rings films debuted, this movie is set within the timeline of those events – specifically, during the seventeen years between Bilbo Baggins’ birthday and Frodo’s journey to destroy the Ring. The film centers on Aragorn’s dangerous mission to capture Gollum, preventing him from revealing the Ring’s location to Sauron.
The screenplay for The Hunt for Gollum was written by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Peter Jackson, along with Boyens, Walsh, and Zane Weiner, will produce the film.
The Lord of the Rings Universe Continues
The Lord of the Rings franchise now includes the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, and The Hobbit films. In 2024, a new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, was released with a different cast. Additionally, Amazon released the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in 2022, which takes place thousands of years before the events of the films, at the start of the Second Age.
Besides the already announced The Hunt for Gollum, set to release in March 2026, Stephen Colbert and his son, Peter McGee (a screenwriter), are developing a new movie. The film will reportedly expand on material that was cut from the theatrical version of Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum premieres in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
