The Limits of a Twice-Yearly Netflix Viewing Report

As a movie critic who’s spent countless nights huddled under the soft glow of the silver screen, I find Netflix‘s viewing data reports to be as captivating as they are confounding. The streamer certainly deserves kudos for their occasional transparency, but the way they release this data is akin to serving a gourmet meal with a side of mystery meat.

If you’re intrigued yet cautious about scrutinizing a dataset of viewing statistics provided by Netflix, they have recently published their biannual engagement report. Although they deserve praise for this degree of openness, the manner in which they distribute data can be questionable. By releasing reports only every six months, it becomes challenging to make comparisons between different shows. For instance, the series they claim as most-watched, titled “Fool Me Once,” has approximately 107 million views, while season three of “Bridgerton” ranks second with about 92 million views.

It’s important to note that the show “Fool Me Once” was launched on New Year’s Day, kicking off the reporting period, whereas the second half of “Bridgerton’s” season didn’t air until June 13. Not everyone immediately watches shows when they debut, but I suspect that once over six months have passed since the third season of “Bridgerton” was released, it will surpass the 107 million views of “Fool Me Once.
