The Legend Of Zelda Timeline Has Seemingly Become More Baffling

As a seasoned gamer who’s navigated through countless timelines and dimensions in my gaming journey, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when it comes to The Legend of Zelda series. Over the years, I’ve seen Link grow from a young boy to an adult, and I’ve watched as the timeline evolved into a complex web that could rival the intricacies of a spider’s web.

Nintendo seems to have unveiled a revised timeline for The Legend of Zelda series, with Ocarina of Time serving as a pivotal point where the storyline divides into three distinct continuities. This new information gives us an understanding of how the latest installments, such as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, are positioned within the broader franchise. However, in an unexpected twist, these games don’t align with the main timeline but rather have their own separate narrative thread

Vooks spotted the new Legend of Zelda timeline at Nintendo Live over this past weekend in Sydney, Australia. The image–seen below–was shared on X by Wario64, showing Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom separated from the official chronology that begins with Skyward Sword.

At the Nintendo Live event in Sydney, 2024, it was revealed that The Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild stand apart from previous Zelda games in their timeline

Originally, many believed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild united the three storylines and concluded them in a single timeline as the final game. However, this recent artwork seems to challenge that theory. If true, this could make the Zelda timeline even more complex, similar to the convoluted plot of the Halloween movie series. Interestingly, the official North American website for the Zelda franchise has yet to reflect any specific placement for Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom

It appears that Zelda fans have shown a greater interest in understanding the game’s timeline compared to Nintendo, who didn’t reveal an official one until much later. In fact, it wasn’t until the early 2010s, nearly three decades after the franchise started on NES, that a comprehensive timeline was published in the Hyrule Historia book

Keep in mind the updated timeline doesn’t even touch on where the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom might land. TopMob just got a recent hands-on with the Switch exclusive and notes it plays like a mini Tears of the Kingdom. Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will launch September 26.
