The long-awaited live-action adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” finally has a confirmed release date! This exciting film is set to hit cinemas on March 26, 2027. Interestingly enough, this means it will follow the release of “The Super Mario Bros. 2” movie in April 2026 by approximately one year. As a result, we can expect two blockbuster Nintendo films to grace our screens at least for two consecutive years!
The release date for the Zelda movie was confirmed in the Nintendo Today app.
In simple terms, it has been announced that Wes Ball, famous for his projects in the Maze Runner franchise, will be at the helm directing the upcoming Zelda movie. The production of this movie is a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony Pictures, with Nintendo contributing over half of the finances. Sony Pictures will take care of distributing the film worldwide.
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to hear that the team behind The Legend of Zelda movie aims to bring Hayao Miyazaki-style live-action magic to life. They want it to feel authentic and tangible – a world I can step into and truly believe exists. It’s an exciting promise, but exactly what that means for the final product is still a mystery.
Previously, he hinted at his concept for the Zelda film. “I have this fantastic notion,” he expressed. “I’ve been pondering it for quite some duration now, about how amazing a Zelda movie could be… I aim to satisfy people’s most profound wishes. I understand the significance of this [Zelda] series, and I want it to be a substantial film that offers an escape.
There hasn’t been any official summary revealed about the Zelda movie by either Nintendo or Sony Pictures. However, given the popularity of the series, it’s likely that characters such as Zelda, Link, and Ganondorf will make an appearance. The Zelda franchise is rich with magical characters and settings, so it’ll be intriguing to discover the narrative direction Nintendo chooses for the movie, or if it might follow a particular game’s storyline.
As of now, there’s no official word on who will be cast in the live-action Zelda film. Nevertheless, many fans believe that Euphoria actor Hunter Schafer could potentially fit the role well for Zelda.
In response to the fan suggestion, Schafer expressed enthusiasm, stating, “That would be incredibly awesome! I’m a big fan of the game myself. As a kid, I used to play it, and I still do now.” Actor Haley Joel Osment has expressed interest in portraying Link in the film.
In additional news about Nintendo, the anticipated release of the Switch 2 is scheduled for this year. Expect Nintendo to disclose further details during their April 2nd Nintendo Direct broadcast, following an earlier event on March 27 that unveiled a game-sharing feature for the Switch 2 and made various other announcements.
