It’s been announced that Nintendo in collaboration with Illumination are working on a new installment of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, leaving many fans eagerly anticipating details about the plot and characters. However, renowned writer and showrunner Craig Mazin from The Last of Us series has an intriguing suggestion: he thinks Nick Offerman would be perfect to voice Wario in the upcoming film.
Mazin shared with IGN that Offerman is expected to deliver an excellent performance, and he will add a sense of weightiness to the character. Offerman portrayed Bill during Season 1 of The Last of Us, featuring in one of the season’s most cherished episodes.
Mazin said he loves the character Wario and thinks he is “misunderstood.”
In 2026, we can expect the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. As per Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad, the upcoming sequel is set to be larger in scale and will introduce a greater number of characters from the Mushroom Kingdom compared to the first film.
Key shared with Men’s Journal that the second film expands its subject matter more extensively, and the setting is captivatingly rich in lore… He hinted at discovering some truly amazing hidden references and found the experience to be incredibly exhilarating thus far.
He commented: “It seems to me that by expanding the creative scope, they’ve broadened the cosmos where these characters dwell, and we will encounter some fresh faces.
As I delve into this fresh game, I can’t help but wonder about the new faces popping up. Key’s hints have me intrigued, especially when he mentioned these characters might be “really deep cuts” – implying they could be some of the more obscure personalities hidden within Mario’s vast universe.
It seems quite plausible that, since Wario wasn’t present in the initial movie, he could make an appearance in the sequel. Some speculate that he might have been shown in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, possibly as the antagonist who knocked down Luigi’s sandcastle during a flashback sequence.
Besides the upcoming Mario animated feature, Nintendo and Sony are collaborating on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. However, the Zelda film project is in its infancy at this stage.
2023 saw the release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and let me tell you, it was a massive hit! Critics were mostly on board, but what really blew everyone away was its box office earnings – over $1.3 billion! It ranked second worldwide that year, just barely behind Barbie. In fact, only 17 films in the entire history of cinema have managed to rake in more dough than The Super Mario Bros. Movie – and I was one of the millions who enjoyed every minute of it!
Firstly, there’s some exciting news for Nintendo fans! The upcoming Nintendo Direct broadcast is scheduled for March 27th. Interestingly, another Nintendo Direct, focusing specifically on the Switch 2, will air on April 2nd. So, mark your calendars and stay tuned for more updates from the world of Nintendo!
