The Last Of Us Star Discusses The Positive Reaction To Major Death And “Crazier” Season 3

HBO’s series The Last of Us ended its second run on a thrilling edge, leaving fans anxiously awaiting the continuation of the tale, particularly interested in unraveling the narrative thread of Abby’s character.

Actress Kaitlyn Dever, known for portraying Abby, has hinted at Season 3, revealing that she has limited information but is aware that it will be more chaotic than Season 2. Additionally, Dever delved into one of the series’ most gripping and emotional scenes, sharing insights about its backstory involving her character losing her mother prior to filming.

This story contains major spoilers.

In the second episode of Season 2, Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) is fatally struck by Abby using a golf club. This gruesome scene sparked intense responses from viewers. Interestingly, Dever discovered that the overall response was more favorable than she anticipated after it was broadcast.

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, she stated, “I eliminate the cherished character adored by all, the embodiment of everyone’s affection.” She further added, “This was unlike anything I’d ever been involved in before. It was as if the entire world was tuned in to this. I had no clue what to anticipate.

Upon the release of The Last of Us: Part II, many individuals responded quite passionately to Joel’s demise. Actress Laura Bailey, portraying Abby in the game, encountered threats and other forms of harassment, including death threats.

Four days following her mother’s funeral, Dever captured this crucial scene. When she later viewed the episode during its broadcast, it felt as though she was witnessing it for the first time since she was still grappling with the sorrow of her mother’s demise.

She explained, “Everything seemed hazy, and I felt like I was witnessing it all for the very first time. I’d catch glimpses of things and respond, ‘Oh, so that’s what it is.’ Grief has an intriguing impact on your mind. It distorts your recollections.

Initially, Dever confessed she was filled with fear at the prospect of returning to work following her mother’s demise, feeling unable to carry on. However, she emphasized that her mother was overjoyed about her success in a TV series and this realization made her feel compelled to continue working. She stated that she decided to return to work as a tribute to her mother.

She shared that her father was incredibly supportive during a time when she felt extremely anxious. He reassured her with words like, “You can do it!” Her mother was thrilled as she had been given the opportunity to be part of this production. Fortunately, the team was understanding and helpful, ensuring that she was well taken care of.

“Crazier” Season 3

In the same conversation, Dever shared her expectations for a more exhilarating third season of The Last of Us, describing it as potentially even more thrilling.

Craig Mazin hasn’t shared details about his plans with me. All he told me was, “Prepare for what’s ahead, as it’s going to be more wild.” This aligns with his previous statement that he wanted Season 2 to surpass Season 1, and he mentioned that Season 3 will be even bigger. So, I’m preparing myself accordingly.

Apart from what was stated, Dever added that she found the idea of a flashback featuring Abby and her father intriguing, expressing her hope for an opportunity to explore such scenes in the future.

“We don’t know what Craig’s plans are. He has been playing with dynamics,” Dever said.

The third season of The Last of Us has been confirmed, though we don’t know its release date just yet. Moreover, according to Mazin, a fourth season is crucial for wrapping up the storyline entirely.

Currently, there are no announced sequels for “The Last of Us” series, but the creators, Naughty Dog, are busy developing “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet” and another unnamed project.
