The Last Of Us Star Bella Ramsey Was “Really Worried” About Filming This One Scene

Actress Bella Ramsey revealed the most challenging scene to shoot in HBO’s The Last of Us series, a moment so intense that it brought a camera operator to tears. According to Ramsey, they were extremely anxious about filming this particular scene. (Please note: This story may contain spoilers.)

According to Ramsey, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the most demanding scene to shoot took place in Season 2, Episode 3, where Ellie opens Joel’s closet and sniffs one of his jackets. Notably, Joel, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, had passed away in the preceding episode. This scene triggers a heart-wrenching emotional response from Ellie, with Ramsey’s acting leaving a lasting impact. The challenge in filming this scene, as Ramsey explained, was that it’s tough for them to cry spontaneously on cue.

As a gamer speaking candidly, I’ve always found it challenging to emote genuinely in emotionally charged scenes. I might manage a single tear, but outright sobbing isn’t something I naturally do, even in my everyday life. The idea of shedding tears in front of a crowd, let alone an entire film set with monitors and more people watching, seems almost unattainable for me. That particular scene was the one that gave me the most trouble, and it required a great deal of emotional fortitude to pull off.

In previous instances, Ramsey admitted they attempted to recall a deeply sad memory from their personal life to trigger tears. However, for this particular scene, Ramsey chose a different method.

Ramsey shared, “I was reminiscing about my most cherished moments with Pedro,” he said. “It’s always bittersweet for me to recall the joyful events. I was thinking back on our initial encounters and our time together during season one, as well as the amusing instances. All of these memories came flooding back, tinged with sadnessnot just the loss of Joel and Ellie, but also the loss of my friendship with Pedro. For me, the memories of Pedro, Joel, Ellie, and myself are deeply connected.

During this particular scene, many viewers may have felt a lump in their throat or even tears welling up, and interestingly enough, the episode’s director of photography, Ksenia Sereda, found herself teary-eyed as she continued to operate the camera.

In a backstage video, Sereda expressed, “I was handling that shot, and I was tearing up along with [Ramsey], as it was incredibly powerful.

Even though Joel is no longer with us, I can’t wait to see more of him in Season 2 of The Last of Us! Tune in every Sunday night at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max for new episodes. Get ready for the introduction of Jeffrey Wright’s character, Isaac, in the next installment.
