Based on the developments in The Last of Us Season 2, it’s not unexpected that Season 3 will present a fresh, new direction. Previously, Catherine O’Hara hinted at Season 3 being focused on Abby, but now, the showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have clarified that Kaitlyn Dever’s character will be the central figure moving forward.
During a Last of Us FYC Emmy event held in New York, as reported by THR, Mazin and Druckmann unveiled their announcement. Dever took part in the discussion virtually, feigning shock at the revelation. Later, Druckmann admitted his astonishment that HBO didn’t challenge the change in perspective for Season 3.
Druckmann expressed his initial doubt about allowing them to carry out this action as they began adapting it. However, he found that they embraced what sets this story apart, providing not just time but also creative freedom for bold moves. He believes the audience values this approach.
There are some spoilers ahead for The Last of Us Season 2.
Additionally, Mazin discussed the choice to eliminate Pedro Pascal’s character Joel, similar to his counterpart in The Last of Us Part II. He emphasized that “this series isn’t about vengeance; it’s about mourning. If no one we genuinely care for deeply loses their life, how can we truly experience grief?
In a more recent conversation, Mazin indicated to upset fans that Pascal isn’t truly deceased, instead, he’s featured in almost every other project.
Previously, the creators of the show detailed the reasons behind altering a confrontation involving Ellie (Bella Ramsey) with two other characters, as well as their decision not to harm Alice the dog. Furthermore, actress Dever has mentioned her interest in producing an episode featuring a flashback of Abby’s father that mimics the one between Ellie and Joel.
HBO hasn’t set a date for The Last of Us Season 3 yet.
