The Last Of Us Showrunner Would Love More Games In The Series

As Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us approaches next week, fans are curious about how much of the second game’s narrative will be included. We know the series won’t strictly follow the game’s timeline, and given the length of the sequel’s gameplay, there might not be enough space for everything in just one season. Some believe that there could potentially be additional seasons of the show, but what if there were more material from the game to draw upon?

In a conversation with Variety, showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that the story told in the games by Neil Druckmann requires more than just this upcoming season to be fully told. Yet, the idea of creating spin-offs has intrigued him, although he’s not the one managing the series at present.

In response to questions about potential new source material for The Last of Us, Mazin stated, “As a devoted fan, I’d be thrilled if Neil creates more games in this series.” As a writer and showrunner, this project is my personal interpretation of The Last of Us. Consequently, this will be the final chapter of my adaptation, encompassing events from both the first and second game.

After that, Mazin discussed the potential for additional series that could encompass wider narratives, much like The Walking Dead, and he mentioned that HBO has introduced House of the Dragon and an upcoming series titled A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms as a means to extend the Game of Thrones saga.

In simpler terms, “I believe there’s a universe where I could contribute more content, similar to how House of the Dragon has continued after Game of Thrones ended. It’s possible they might reach out to me for advice or ideas. However, it won’t be my project to manage; someone else will take care of that.

In Season 2, which unfolds five years after the end of Season 1, tensions between Joel and Ellie have escalated due to the intense events that transpired at the close of the previous season. The upcoming season promises further suspense, as it incorporates elements from The Last of Us Part II game and introduces new characters, including Abby Anderson, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever.

HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on Max and HBO on April 13.
