Following Max’s triumph in incorporating American Sign Language (ASL) into some of its major films, it’s now one of their original series making history by offering an ASL edition. The return of “The Last of Us” is set for April 13th, but from March 31st, fans who are deaf or hard of hearing can re-watch the entire first season with CODA star, Daniel Durant, interpreting the dialogue in sign language.
According to IndieWire’s report, not only does Season 1 feature an American Sign Language (ASL) version, but when Season 2 is released, it too will simultaneously air with ASL. Durant and director Leila Hanaumi are set to perform the ASL for Season 2.
Durant explained to IndieWire that while captions are often used, they’re typically in English grammar structure. Including a sign language interpreter enhances the message clarity, providing additional insights and meanings. For deaf individuals, this means understanding the content using their own language, making it more accessible and enriching.
During his segment in the program, Durant intends to minimize distractions compared to past methods. Instead of appearing in a confined box on the screen, he will be positioned in the bottom right corner. Last year, Max presented a version of Barbie using American Sign Language (ASL) with Hanaumi interpreting the entire film. However, are there signs for the technical terms used throughout the show? Hanaumi mentions that new signs are constantly being developed by deaf scientists.
In his portion of the program, Durant seeks to reduce distractions compared to prior methods. He’ll be placed in the bottom right corner rather than a small boxed-in area on the screen. Last year, Max introduced an ASL version of Barbie with Hanaumi interpreting the entire film. But do they use signs for the technical terms used throughout the show? Hanaumi notes that new signs are being created by deaf scientists all the time.
This incredible level of access is a significant development, as it connects with deaf individuals across various professions and industries. Today, we have more deaf scientists than ever before, and they are inventing new sign language terms for scientific concepts,” Hanaumi explained. “We were fortunate enough to utilize the signs created by these scientifically-minded deaf people, making the process both exciting and progressional in terms of ASL accessibility. It’s not just about entertainment; this development is driven by professional motivation as well.
In the series, a significant transformation occurred in the character Sam, who shared a common interest in comics with Ellie, as seen in the game. In the show, this role was brought to life by young deaf actor Keivonn Woodard. Durant has chosen to preserve Woodard’s performance while only providing interpretation for Bella Ramsey’s lines.
