In Season 2 of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Kaitlyn Dever takes on the role of Abby, a character who holds great importance as seen by those who have played the game or know the story. Abby has sparked much debate, discussion, and conversation since the release of “The Last of Us: Part II” in 2020, and it’s anticipated that similar discussions will arise for the television adaptation.
In her chat with Collider, Dever shared that she’s noticed the discussions about Abby, but while delivering her role, she didn’t give it undue attention.
She mentioned, “I was certainly aware of the chatter about Abby, but to give my best performance, I needed to keep my attention primarily on my work rather than delving too deeply into it.” In essence, she believed that staying focused on her role would have been compromised if she had paid too much attention to online discussions about the character. Ultimately, delivering a strong performance was her top priority.
In a subsequent statement, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the masterminds behind The Last of Us series, appeared unfazed by the criticism leveled at Abby in the game while working on the television adaptation.
In a heartwarming turn of events, it felt fantastic to see them placing faith in my abilities for this part. Consequently, their trust propelled me with self-assurance as I embraced the challenge of playing such a role, as I confidently moved forward. (Said Dever)
In a previous capacity, Laura Bailey portrayed Abby within a video game. Notably, she’s openly shared experiences of harassment she endured from the gaming community, which regrettably extended to threats against her infant child’s life.
Part II, it doesn’t cover everything. As for the next season, we’re yet to know where exactly Season 2 will conclude its narrative.
Every Sunday, you can catch the latest installments of The Last of Us starting at 6 PM Pacific Time/9 PM Eastern Time. To get a sneak peek of upcoming Season 2 events, be sure to watch this trailer!
