The Last Of Us Season 2 Is The Show’s “Empire Strikes Back” Season, Showrunner Says

In April 13th, HBO’s series The Last of Us begins its second season, and its showrunner Craig Mazin hinted that this season will be similar to “The Empire Strikes Back” from Star Wars, indicating a more somber direction for the narrative. He mentioned in an interview that sequels can be difficult because the characters face tests in unanticipated ways.

In the first season, the main characters Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) faced numerous challenges but managed to thrive for the most part. However, it seems they might not have as much luck in Season 2, as stated by showrunner Scott M. Gimple when he said, “They aren’t getting away with anything” regarding Joel and Ellie during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Mazin shared his affection for The Empire Strikes Back, expressing the opinion that everyone else should feel the same way. He admires this film particularly because it presents a challenging second act, where characters face trials and must adapt to their new circumstances. They’re no longer their old selves, but they haven’t yet embraced their new roles. This sense of being adrift is what he finds compelling.

Season 2 resumes five years later since the end of Season 1, and the bond between Joel and Ellie has become tense. The upcoming season promises additional suspense as it incorporates aspects from The Last of Us: Part II and introduces fresh characters such as Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever.

In the interview, Mazin reaffirmed that the TV adaptation of The Last of Us will only cover the storylines within the game series, as Naughty Dog currently has no plans for The Last of Us Part 3. This has sparked speculation among fans about whether a hypothetical Season 3 could mark the end of the show’s narrative.

Mazin clearly stated that he won’t proceed beyond the game. If anyone has been pondering, “Ah, they must be up to the old trick of making money…” then let me make it clear, that’s not the case.

Part II”. If everything can be covered in one more season, that would be ideal, but if it seems logical to split it into two, then that’s what they might do. Previously, HBO executives mentioned that “The Last of Us” could conclude after Season 4.
