This is a decrease of 30% compared to the viewership for the Season 2 premiere in April, which had 5.3 million viewers, and a decrease of 55% compared to the 8.2 million viewers who watched the Season 1 finale in 2023 (as reported by Variety).
To clarify, these statistics only account for the number of viewers tuning in specifically for their Sunday night broadcasts. It’s worth noting that many individuals either can’t or prefer not to watch fresh episodes on their original air dates. Additionally, some audience members opt to wait until an entire season is released, allowing them to binge-watch the series all at once.
Compared to Season 1, Season 2 of the show is seeing a higher viewer turnout on average, with HBO disclosing that each episode in Season 2 has garnered approximately 37 million viewers within 90 days across all broadcasting channels, as opposed to 32 million per episode for Season 1.
The final episode of The Last of Us Season 2 ended with an intense cliffhanger, setting the stage for Season 3 which will primarily feature Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. It’s possible that a fourth season may be produced at some point in the future. As of now, HBO has not specified a release date for Season 3 or confirmed if the show will continue beyond that.
Regarding the popular game series, The Last of Us 3 has yet to be officially confirmed by Naughty Dog, although there are several hints suggesting its existence. What has been verified, on the other hand, is that Naughty Dog is working on a brand-new intellectual property titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as at least one additional project. Previously, they had also been developing a multiplayer version of The Last of Us, but it was ultimately scrapped.
