The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 3 Live Blog: I’m Talking The Aftermath Of Joel’s Tragedy, Ellie’s Recovery And More

Warning: Spoilers for those not watching The Last of Us‘ latest episode, currently airing on HBO or streamed with a Max subscription.

In the second episode of its second season, HBO’s “The Last of Us” presented a heart-wrenching death that many shows would reserve for their final episodes. However, by killing off Pedro Pascal’s character Joel, co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were simply sticking to the script they had themselves written based on Neil’s work on the critically acclaimed video game “The Last of Us Part II”. Despite this, it failed to lessen the torrent of tears.

As an avid enthusiast of the original content, I completely grasp and endorse the rationale behind preserving Joel’s death authenticity and timing, despite alterations in the timeline to explain Abby’s sudden violence. I’m equally thrilled and apprehensive about how this popular show will continue to unfold post-such a shocking event, and I plan to share my thoughts live as the tense episode unfolds. (In case you missed it, don’t forget to check out my live blog from the Season 2 premiere.)

Some of my initial hopes for the episode:

  • Joel’s death revealed to be a dream.
  • Joel’s death revealed to be a hoax.
  • Joel’s death revealed to be a total mistake, and he was just in a weird, non-breathing, open-eyed coma.
  • For Ellie to beat the shit out of something as a way to counteract some of her angst.
  • More cute Ellie and Dina moments that are completely free from tragic deaths.

It seems to me that I’m just anticipating those final two scenarios as viable options. Yet, there’s always a glimmer of hope for miracles, even when fungi dominates our planet.
