The Last Of Us Season 2 Abby Actor Needed Extra Security, Co-Star Says

As a dedicated fan of The Last of Us series, I must say that the upcoming Season 2 has me both excited and saddened by the experiences of its cast members. On one hand, I am thrilled to see the adaptation of characters from the beloved game, including Abby, who has been a subject of much debate among fans. However, it’s disheartening to learn about the backlash that actress Kaitlyn Dever and even Isabela Merced, who plays Dina in the show, have faced because of their roles.

In Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, characters from the game The Last of Us Part II are introduced, among them Abby. This character stirred up a lot of controversy when the game was released in 2020, and it seems that similar discussions may arise with Abby on the TV show. Actress Isabela Merced, who plays Dina in Season 2, addressed the criticism against Abby during an interview, stating “there are plenty of peculiar individuals out there.” She also reminded people that Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever in the series, is a fictional character and therefore cannot harm you. In addition, Merced disclosed that extra security was provided for Dever while filming.

In his interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Merced stated that there are individuals who truly despise someone named Abby, but it’s essential to remember that she is not a real person.

It was further mentioned that actress Kaitlyn Dever, portraying Abby in The Last of Us Season 2, required additional security during filming due to escalated safety concerns. Previously, Laura Bailey (Abby’s character from the game) had experienced death threats and various forms of abuse, including threats against her newborn baby.

Merced stated that due to the filming, Kaitlyn required enhanced security measures. She’s an incredibly calm and composed individual, always keeping a clear perspective on things.

During the shooting of The Last of Us Season 2, Dever was also going through a deeply personal ordeal – the loss of her mother due to breast cancer earlier in the year.

“Give her the damn Emmy. I’m so excited for people to see how incredibly well [Ellie actor Bella Ramsey] and Kaitlyn did on this. I’m so excited,” Merced said.

In addition, during the interview, Merced addressed the overall criticism towards the TV show, expressing her bewilderment as to why people are so agitated.

According to Merced, the showrunner Craig Mazin and the creator of the game Neil Druckmann collaborate on this project. If you appreciate what he has produced before, then why are you upset about him creating more? Merced said, “I’m too outspoken for Twitter. Seeing this makes me want to channel Cardi B and express my frustration.”

In 2025, the second season of “The Last of Us” will debut, featuring only seven episodes instead of the nine in the first season. However, news about a potential third season has not been confirmed as of now.

As for the game series, Naughty Dog has heavily teased The Last of Us: Part III.

In a 2024 interview, Druckmann mentioned that he’s been pondering the idea of The Last of Us 3. For quite some time, he hadn’t been able to come up with an appropriate concept. However, things have shifted recently. He doesn’t have a full story yet, but he does have a captivating concept that he finds as thrilling as the first and second games. This idea stands on its own, yet it maintains a connection tying all three parts together. As such, he feels there might be another chapter to this narrative.
