It’s been announced that ‘The Last of Us’ will return for a third season even before the second season debuts on April 13.
The first season was based on the highly praised 2013 PlayStation game with the same name, but due to the immense scale of its sequel, “The Last of Us Part II” released in 2020, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann initially intended to divide its storyline into numerous seasons. In a recent conversation with EbMaster about the upcoming seven-episode Season 2, Mazin expressed his belief that the series may have “one or two more seasons” left before concluding the events of “Part II.
He mentioned that creating each episode becomes increasingly challenging due to their growing size. He doesn’t want fans to have to wait four years for a season finale consisting of 17 episodes, or however many there are.”
“He explained that making each episode is becoming more difficult as they get larger in scale. He expressed his concern about asking the audience to wait four years for a season with 17 episodes (or whatever the number may be).
With the announcement of its renewal, Mazin expressed in a subsequent statement that they tackled Season 2 with the aim of producing something they could take pride in. The final product surpassed their highest expectations due to their ongoing partnership with HBO and the exceptional efforts of our extraordinary cast and team.
In a world devastated by a fungal outbreak that turned victims into zombies, the critically acclaimed drama series “The Last of Us,” which debuted in 2023, was one of HBO’s highest-rated shows during its initial season, garnering an impressive 24 Primetime Emmy Award nominations. The stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are set to reprise their roles for Season 2, alongside Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley. Joining the cast in new roles are Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Danny Ramirez, Jeffrey Wright, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pantoliano, Alanna Ubach, Ben Ahlers, Hettienne Park, Robert John Burke, and Noah Lamanna.
Druckmann, who wrote and oversaw the game series, expressed that witnessing ‘The Last of Us’ come to life so accurately and beautifully has been a notable achievement for him. He is thankful for the fans’ passionate and intense backing. A large part of our success can be attributed to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our collaboration with HBO, and the team at PlayStation Productions,” said Druckmann.
Besides Mazin and Druckmann, the executive producers on this project also include Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells. Halley Gross serves as a writer and co-executive producer.
